The figures must be accurate, but I’m interested in what constitutes a sale over there, as here in the UK, a “sale” is a new car registration, and dealers have pre-registered cars sat in garages/ compounds all over the country. The same system would make sense in the US, as I travel all over the US several times a year, and have hardly seen any. |

Maybe the answer is the reported Tesla sales are the fulfillment of the 400,000 pre-order slots yet the cars are not yet delivered to customers. We are on the East Coast outside of Washington DC. But in reality I think there are just simply more F30s on US roads than Model 3's. Here are the sales numbers for MY 2018: (July - Sept is really when Tesla 3's started out selling the 3-series in significant numbers)

Thursday night I swear I saw a Model 3 with a new front fascia with a nice looking grille in it. It was in heavy fast-moving traffic off my right 6 and peeled off on the Rt 28 exit off the Dulles Toll Road, so I couldn't get a good look at it. It definitely was a Model 3 because I passed it from behind a few lanes over and saw the single "T" on the trunk. I've googled for it and didn't come up with much. It looked like this, which looks great IMO:

These cars are starting to grow on me and I'd never thought I'd say that. When you're tired of paying $4+/gallon and driving 350-400mi/week. Too bad they not available for lease yet.

Regarding fuel costs, you have to look at the overall cost of ownership and just not the price you pay for fuel. Until EVs get into the $35K price range (as an upper price) they economically don't make sense if purchased. Leasing is a different equation. I drive 800/week. Trust me, I've run the numbers every which way including Sunday. I just am having a hard time getting over the TV screen. I've seen it live in action, and I just didn't get the wood for it. The map size is great, but the screen is just too big IMO. But every car has compromises. My real issue with it is out in the woods where I live, you need very dim dash lighting so as to be able to pick up the critters that roam freely in the headlights at night. My friend who owns the 3 I was in is going to see how low the screen dims and report back. Living in the burbs, he really never knew dash lighting to be an issue.

Some lowering springs and set of rims...gives it a sportier look as well. |

Saab cars, before GM bought it, used to have a night time function for the gauge cluster that only lit the speedometer at night, and other gauges remained dark unless needed. Being the Tesla's screen is fully programmable, hopefully Elon sees fit to make it Customer configurable at some point.

SoCal. Literally see 1 every 10 mins during my commute.

So I got some more time in a Model 3 on Thursday. It was a bit over 30 minutes as a back seat passenger. I have to say other than the e-drivetrain, there's not much to this car to admire. The back seat cushion is far too low, which is directly related to the depth of the floor. There is no toe room under the front seat to give you those few needed inches to stretch your legs out, leaving your thighs unsupported and your body weight on spread on your tailbone. That was the most uncomfortable I've been in a car in a long time, and that goes back to 1970's era econoboxes, where the design criteria for the back seat was politely to say, "lackluster".
The Model 3's ride is horrible. It is poorly damped and harshly sprung. You can feel the car struggling to manage with the 4,000 pounds of sprung weight. Some of the materials used for the interior are admirable, but most are not and cheap appearing. As an example, the integration of the rear door arm ledge into the B pillar was just an oversight where a squarish block form meets a rounded form (the B pillar); if this were a GM car, magazines would write paragraphs on just that design feature alone - it just looks bad. The interior is quite bland but decently manufactured for what it is. With all the discussion in E90 Post about interiors and how Audi reigns supreme, the Tesla's interior is a far cry in comparison. I got to observe the big screen even more. Not being able to turn off the map is just annoying in my opinion. The squarish screen unfortunately contrasts too much with the rounded shapes of the rest of the interior. The screen would have fit in quite well with a 1980's Pontiac Fiero. While kudos must go to Musk for starting a car company from the ground up, especially one that has delved into a an engineering discipline not well supported by the automotive industry in a lot of respects because it is new, I think the Model 3 reflects the difficulties of such an endeavor.

A couple of weeks ago the NY-Metro area was surprised by a snow storm that crippled roadways. People that had a 15 minute commute were in traffic for 5-6 hours.
Whenever I hear another one of my friends tell me a horror story of their short commute turning into hours and hours, I think of what a disaster this would be if they were in an EV. You might have plenty of range on a normal day, but a bad traffic jam could mean you're going to be waiting for a tow truck.
