Considering first ever BMW

Hey all!

Long time lurker, first time poster.

I'm looking at purchasing a 2009 328xi and would greatly appreciate and tips / price advice. Here's a little bit about the car:

2009 328 xi
140K km / 87K miles
6 speed MT
Navigation
1 previous owner
Dealer does not have history of major services like ignition coils, brakes, water pump etc. I'm pretty mechanically inclined which gives me piece of mind even considering a used BMW. Dealership is asking $11500 CAD or $9000 USD.

From my research there is definitely some room for negotiation on the price. I was wondering what a fair offer would be and what kind of service I would be looking at having to do at this mileage. Any other tips would be awesome too!

Looking forward to joining the club.
Ps. pics attached.

Go straight to BMw and get a PPI.....however much they tell you it's going to need to get service up to date should give you a little negotiating leverage.

Thanks for the quick reply!

I agree, a PPI is a must. Would you recommend going to a BMW dealer or some third party indie shop that works on German imports. I see you're from southern Ontario too so I'm not sure if you've heard of RMP or Bimmex, any thoughts on those vs dealerships?

Thanks for the reply! Would there be any reason to get a sport or M-sport package for any reason other than more performance? I'm just looking for a daily driver so sports or performance trims won't do much for me....or my insurance for that matter. But if they tend to be more reliable, I'll definitely look into it!

Definitely get the first level PPI like others suggested. Do it a BMW dealership, it is the only $350 I have, and will ever give them but it was totally worth it.

Also I would go in at 10.5K for an offer. See what the PPI shows first and go from there. Let us know how it goes!

M sport gives you prettier plastic trim.
On a E90 only other things you would get is sports seats, and a fatter steering wheel. Performance wise it gives you nothing. XI gets its own suspension no matter what package you go with. On a 335 you would also get an oil cooler but that's only in a 335.

Almost forgot, wheels. You get the nicer wheels.

Go to BMW dealer for PPI or someone honest that knows this platform very well.
Never been to Bimmex but heard good things about RMP on this forum....just do a search here!

And m-sport front/rear bumpers and might get pdc and may be side skirts?

Since it has 140k these are the maintenances that definitely should have been changed already

1. Coolant changed
2. Front and rear Differential oil changed
3. Brake fluid changed
4. Transfer case oil changed
5. Transmission oil changed
6. Water pump and thermostat changed

Things to watch out:
1. Oil pan gasket leak
2. Valve cover gasket leak
3. Oil filter gasket leak
3. Eccentric sensor

Thank you so much guys! I'm away for work until next week but I've booked the PPI and the dealer said it's all good. In the mean time, I'll be doing some more reading on things to watch out for. I'll report back what happens!

Go for it

I bought my first BMW 12 years ago and I will never buy another make of car.

Properly cared for they will last forever. Give it a go, you will not regret it.
