- Never changed the mileage, as this cluster came out of a lower mileage vehicle, so I never bothered looking into it.

- Leaving the VIN at FF worked fine

- Putting the JB4 in MAP 0 fixed the VIN mismatch error (duh)

- I hooked up the cluster, put the car in MAP 0, opened up NCSExpert in Expertmodus, wrote to KOMBI and it worked. No tamper dot, no errors anywhere, all cluster features seem to be working. I even have new dash light features for the traction control disable my previous cluster didn't have. Variable tach works fine.

ONE LAST ISSUE:
The gauges are all a little low
- Tach is low...a good 100RPM or so off at idle, which obviously multiplies the problem at higher RPM

- Temp gauge is also a bit low. I'd guestimate it is 5 degrees low @ 160. I do love the new range starting at 120...much more useful.

- Fuel also seems a bit low. Can't tell from a level standpoint, but during gauge hijacking for boost, my peak boost (which is typically 16psi in 3rd) was only around 14 on the gauge - a little harder to tell since there are no hash marks on this gauge.

- Speedo is showing lower and I want to leave that as-is, as it always read high. I have the digital speedo enabled with the corrector disabled, so that's where I depend on my accurate reading.

My guess is I didn't get the needles back on perfectly. Obviously I can just pull it apart and move the needles but is there something else I can do to fine tune it?
Suprised that setting it to FF worked for you. I tried it and just got a tamper dot and NCSExpert wouldn't connect. Writing the actual VIN in the location got it working for me.

Plug your cluster into the car with the shell removed. Use INPA with the KOMBI module and run the output tests for the needles. It will ask you for a value (e.g mph/fuel level/rpm). Select 0 for all the tests. Then place your needles onto zero. Don't use other values because the test script isn't tailored for an M3 cluster's gauge faces.

Ahh, now this is very helpful. I will try that some time over the next week. I have a feeling the gauge hijacking scaling for the JB4 isn't right with the M3 cluster, as my oil temp seems pretty close but when that gauge is hijacked for coolant temp it is way off. Probably the same with boost on fuel as well.

Night pic

Still working well. I like this a lot better than the original cluster. Too bad there isn't a way to turn the DCT lights into shift lights.

What if you decide to put the stock cluster back in car. For what ever reason,do you have to recode that or no?Will it just work like normal?

Excactly how it was done on mine (by a friend) After only the cruise control did not work but coding the cluster to match the car fix that as well.

I haven't cleaned it in a couple months either and this is my daily driver (excluding snow days or when I decide to drive my truck). I'm not exactly hard on the interior...you wouldn't be saying the same thing if you saw the interior of my wife's car (yuck).

I can't believe people pay $400 to have the EEPROM programmed.

Hey guys! So I guess that you figured out a solution for this (hopefully). The temperature unit burned out on my instrument cluster on my E90 due to a voltage spike (I'm 95% positive). Some fog light/horn wires came in contact with the 3-4V temperature sensor wires which comes directly into the cluster. So after a new sensor and lots of wiring testing, I think I can finally conclude that the temperature unit burned out on my cluster so I need to replace it.

If i bought used cluster from the same make and model as my car, would I be able to swap the eeprom chips and have no tamper issues and have my original mileage? Any help would be gladly appreciated because I've been having a massive headache the past few days trying to figure this out. Thanks!

you can swap the chips. but surely its easier to get a cheap r270 programmer and test clip and just reprogram a used cluster? its a simple job. no need to touch a soldering iron...

NCSExpert doesn't let you code the cluster unless the VIN matches. You will need to remove the eeprom and write the vin. If the cluster is from a higher milage car, you will need to buy a new M35080 eeprom off ebay for $3. This is becausde the M35080 eeprom doesn;t allow odometer less than the current reading (its a tamper protection for people who want to turn back the odometer)

Do the job right imo. Find the nearest hackerspace and get them to remove the eeprom and write it for you.
How do you calibrate the dials?
I successfully erased the vin and coded mine. Damper dot is gone but the speedo dial is off.
Is there something to edit in the FSW?

I guess you didn't put it back in 100% the correct position?

You need to use INPA with the output tests for the instrument cluster

The INPA scripts aren't designed for the M3 cluster though. Only fuel level and RPM work properly. Speedo is scaled differently on the M3 and most e9x cars have an instantaeous fuel consumption gauge (n54 is an exception) where the oil temp gauge would normally go. INPA only supports the instantaneous fuel consumption gauge.

I just enter 0kph in INPA and line it up best I can. Then go for a drive with the cluster resting on the steering column and see how accurate it is. I can then readjust if necessary.

Thanks a lot.
My speedo wasn't off actually. I was relying on the speedo test on INPA. When I took it for a drive everything was working perfectly

No, it doesn't come with it. You have to buy a test clip / wires / headers (solderless push fit work well) separately. It's cheap and easy though...

This.... Looks so nice! I love the cold start rpm gauge. Thats one thing I miss a lot with my 5 series. It gave me a lot more reading far as what its safe to do and when.

Hi there, i'm trying to program m3 manual e92 cluster on to my e89 z4, all gauges work except that the Fuel is reading backwards. when i fill up it goes to empty and warning, when i drive more it starts going up to full when is almost empty

Does any one know if the coding will fix this issue?
