2012 E93 trunk won't open

The trunk on my 2012 335is conv. won't open more than the 3-5mm prior to hitting the latch. This car DOES NOT have a valet switch in the glove box. It seemed to have started when I fully closed the trunk manually instead it allowing the trunk to automatically fully close.
Anyone with a similar prior experience or solution....please advise

I'm not fully understanding what the problem is. The trunk stops opening after a couple of mm, and you cannot open it to put items inside?

Does it open the opposite way to allow the top to come down?

Yes, I can put the top down. I think the pin that engages the latch shifted when I slammed the trunk closed instead of gently lowering to the near closed position and allowing it to finally close automatically

Hmm - I wouldn't think that to cause a problem. My wife is notorious for slamming my trunk and has done so numerous times without issue, even though it does make me cringe.

So, to confirm before I do research, you are saying that if you grab the touch pad on the back of the trunk and attempt to open it, it cracks open but won't go any further than that? Have you also checked to see if the same problem occurs when you use the trunk button inside the car on the dash?

Does it seem that there is a mechanical item stopping it from opening? Like, you can hear it banging against something that is stopping it from opening? If you have the ski passthrough, you could drop that down and try taking a look around with a flashlight. Also, Is your glove compartment locked? If it is locked, the car is in valet mode which means the trunk can't be opened.

Correct on all three...
1. touch pad,
2. key fob,
3. dash switch
all the same outcome...opens a few mm against a rigid stop, then closes automatically after about 10 seconds

Hmm - nearly all issues with the E93 trunk stem from the valet switch. Plus, they usually all cause the trunk not to open at all. Sounds like yours is releasing with the button but is being hindered somehow and not opening.

I would try to open the top and stop the process when the trunk is fully open (parcel mode). Then, you have plenty of room to look around in there and see what is causing the trunk to not open. Based on what you are saying, it sounds like something is catching somewhere - simply cycling the top open and closed might resolve it. If not, I would imagine you should be able to visually see what the problem is when the trunk is fully open in parcel mode.

Side note - where in TN are you? I am in TN as well.

Let me know if you are still having problems after checking this.

I'm in Northeast TN, so quite a way from you.

You can see in this pic that the release detent should rotate further counterclockwise (towards the arrow) this pic is take with the emergency release pulled. Similar situation on both sides

Have you tried using the metal key to manually open it?

Mine has a key slot on the left side under where the 335i badge is; I guess they omitted it on later cars like the valet switch.
