BMW rubber/plastics/seals kinda suck in general. At least valve cover gaskets are really easy to change.

Because carbon deposit build up is related to fuel quality, it cannot be considered a defect in a vehicle's materials or workmanship. Consequently, performing the BMW Group Fuel Injection & Induction System Cleaning Procedure is not covered under the terms of the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty or maintenance plan.

Yeah, almost always. It's like $20 and 15 minutes being thorough on an M20. It's also pretty trivial on M52s, M54s, and S54s. Can't imagine N-series engines would be much harder to change a leaking VCG. OTOH, a common problem on your engine seems to be broken bolts, which may make this a pain, depending on how hard it is to extract them.
