Want to add OEM oil cooler
Hello,
I have two 335's. One 2008 and one 2007. The '07 does not have the factory oil cooler and the '08 does. To add this cooler I would only need three parts: 1) In fender oil cooler and vent plastic piece in fender well 2) New OFH with oil thermostat 3) Oil lines connecting these two Is it that simple? What are thoughts of using used parts from eBay or another source? |

You also need the 2 brackets and plug to bolt one of them to the frame piece. Do a search on here and you'll find 20+ threads about it. I'm currently doing it as well on my 09'. I would not recommend using used oil coolers or lines only because you don't know if they have any sludge or metal flakes built up inside and you really cant clean them out all that well. I got a used OFH from a local junk yard for $20, tore it apart, cleaned it and all new seals for less than what you would buy one on ebay. And don't forget to add the extra amount of oil it takes to fill the new cooler+lines

I've wondered about adding an oil cooler to my 07' 335i also. The thing is, even when I'm running the car pretty hard (not tracking it, just spirited street driving), I rarely see oil temps up past 235f....and normally its around 220-225.
From what I've seen...even guys with the oem oil coolers see pretty much the same oil temps as I do without a cooler. Maybe they only help if you are pushing the motor to it's max on the track?

That and what environment you live in. I live on the east coast and we get anywhere from 10 degrees in the winter to 100 degrees in summer. I've found that it definitely helps out when you start modifying with tunes and FBO. I think if you have a shroud around the cooler (ER sports series cooler) to direct airflow directly at it then it would be more functional than the factory that just kinda sits in the bumper with nothing directing air to it.

What temps are people getting who are running OEM oil coolers? I'm FBO, with bigger turbos making close to 600hp...and even in 100f Missouri here in the summer, my oil temps are 225f cruising around, and might hit 240f if I'm really working the motor really hard.
How much does the OEM cooler reduce oil temps? |

I see about 15-20 degree cooler temps in the car with the cooler. Same climate, same driving. Thank you for your comments.

I have two n54 cars that I track extensively. One is twin turbo, PI, 20psi map with track cooling mode, manual transmission, oem oil cooler, and aux coolant radiator, the other is single turbo conversion, PI, 30 psi map with track cooling mode, automatic transmission, dual ER oil coolers. Both have CFS coolant radiators. The one with manual transmission and aux coolant radiator is experiencing high oil temp but never as high and never in limp as the automatic that goes past limp threshold of 265f easy even with dial oversized oil coolers. My opinion is that better coolant system would help more than oil cooler setup.

Cooling system replaced already
First thing I did on both cars was replace the entire cooling system; radiator, thermostat, micky mouse flange, reservoir, all hoses, etc. I just like seeing that needle to the left of center more often than on the right side. But it also does not get very hot where I live. Seems like a cheap enough upgrade for the '07.

I think because the oil cooler has a thermostat it gives you a bad picture. Like for example, you would only see the effects once the temps start to rise and the car needs to cool down more. It won't necessarily just always run cooler. I had the same "pet peeve" so to say, thought my temps were oddly high with an oil cooler. I managed to lower my average/cruising temps with the higher cooling mode for the waterpump with MHD, if you haven't changed that yet could be worth trying it. |

Have anyone tried this out?
https://burgertuning.com/products/sp...l-cooler-valve Or you can just remove it, but it takes ages until the car reaches operating temp. |
