335i unknown wire coming out of dash...

Hi all,

First post so hopefully I'm in the right place! I've just purchased my first BMW, a 2008 335i and loving it! All is well but I have noticed a wire coming out of the drivers side of the dash by the A pillar and wondering if anyone has an idea what it might be for?

The previous owner has upgraded the audio with an Alpine processor in the boot but I'm unsure if it's related. Here is a picture anyway:

It looks like there may be a pair of power wires and a signal wire? I'm not sure!

Cheers.

Unplug it and find out what it does.
Or just trace it,will lead you to a source....although that may involve car surgery/disassembly.

my guess would be it's the cable from an elm327 canbus/obd2 reader. The OBD2 port is down there (look for a cover that clips on, I think it says 'obd2' on it). Is the cable connected there ?

Found the offending wire!

Looks like the previous owner wired a 5V power supply permanently in. It dropped out when I removed the trim in the footwell!

It almost looks like a cigarette lighter plug... awful and not very well executed/implemented.

Well done for finding this!
