I really dont think its necessary to go past OE here, but that's my opinion. And by OE I mean the manufacture brand that produces for BMW instead of BMW brand. Mahle is generally the OE filter producer.

No reason to deviate from OE. Mann HU816X is the OE filter - genuine BMW filters say Mann on them:

MANN HU-816x. OEM. Don't use anything else. Most the aftermarket shit doesn't fit correctly and are more expensive than OEM. I've never used anything but a MANN filter. I just passed 370,000 miles and my 29th oil change. I did several OCI's at 18,000+ miles, every used filter came out just as solid as new the day I put it in.

I bought a used Z4 in 2014 that also has the N52. CarMax changed the oil. I checked the oil filter the day after I bought it and sure enough it was a Purolator. It was all squished up. The MANN is available at Autozone for under $10. On line vendors sell it for $7.50.

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

Mann very OE and lots of folks use them.

I have moved to Hengst, only a a few $ more and a very high quality product (OEM size, perfect fit).

The Mann filter is cheap and perfect. There's no reason to look somewhere else.
