Bad starter?
Just took my car to BMW for the airbag recall and it started acting funny at the dealership: they said that while the car was idling, it died. And now, they said the car has a bad starter since it will not start up. I thought starters usually gave signs before dying but mine was perfectly fine before this. The idling and then dying doesn't seem like a normal starter situation to me as well. Is this just a coincidence or did they do something sketchy?
Thanks, guys. |

I totally agree. They will try to rape you and quoting you crazy prices probably around $900 Tow your car out of there if needed and buy the starter online for about $175 BOSCH kind. Replace it yourself if you can. I just did few weeks ago. |

Sounds almost like a battery to me if it was idling funny then died and won't start.
The key is: does it turn over and not start, or does it just not turn at all?

I made them push start me and drove it home. Just tried hitting it and car still doesn't start. I'm gonna order a reman Bosch unit off oembimmerparts and replace it soon. CT I just hear a clicking. Battery is new and measures 12.75v at idle.

yeah most likely is your starter. Try to hit it from above with a pry-bar or something while someone push the start button.. see if you are able to start it once more. If it does start, then definitely is a bad starter... |

Buddy I just replaced my Starter 2 days ago.
My Strarter went without any warning.....like morning drive it worked. came home, Parked it....evening wife was not able to start it. Not sure which e90 you have....but remove windshield cowling...and air filter. then I lined up two 3/8 extensions a 6 inch and a 3 inch. and the gap between last two intake port towards the windshield...... slide these extensions and you should be on top the starter. just hammer it lightly..... (when you drive a nail into wood.....the first few taps are just to make the nail stand....that is max force) light taps. mine started like that. but follow NGEE's DIY guide. and the specialty tool he stated it a MUST. no way without it. |

update: replaced starter and it's good now. cranking sounds much different; just a fast whirr for a split second and the car starts. i guess the previous sound i thought was normal was just the sound of an old starter.

yeah i highly doubt it was the starter that killed it. probably a bad battery and/or alternator.
but if it wont start, definitely replace the starter yourself |
