Picture of a Cracked Rim

A friend of mine sent me this photo a little while ago. He cracked his rim heading to work this morning. He was driving from Long Island, New York to the Manhattan. He is at the dealership now. All I can say is wow...

Wow! Just out of curiosity, was he running RFT's? I have to think that the stupid sidewalls on those things transfers more force to the wheel. I'm sure the dealer will check this, and it certainly looks like the wheel took the brunt of things, but be sure to check the control arms, steering rod and subframe for any damage too.

He just purchased his 328xi a few weeks ago. These are OEM wheels and yes, I believe they are on RFTs. Dealer's stating they are not covering the replacement of the wheel.

Happy to see that it didn't lead to an accident and he got the car to a garage safely.

BMW needs to address the RFT = cracked wheels issue. There's a thread on the UK regionals about people cracking countless 230s.

In the year of owning my car, I've cracked 2 159s, haven't hit any notable potholes and live where roads aren't terrible.

The best we can do is hop on a 5th spare when one becomes available for cheap, throw it in the trunk/garage, and keep our fingers crossed.

I've had about 3 customers in the past 2 weeks calling to replace their wheels because they cracked their oem wheels. The dealer isn't replacing any of their wheels. I believe there's a class action law suit coming to them VERY soon. OE wheels should not crack so easily.

as of to date the only wheel bmw replaces due to cracking is the ellipsoid wheel off of the 6-series. your right it is common and it is due to the fact that bmw uses lead based wheels that are made to be strong enough to handle runflats. but in turn the cast can crack easily

He must have hit something big. Yes, OEM wheels crack, but the amount of energy needed to crack them far exceeds the energy needed to bend most aftermarket wheels.

Somehow I have a feeling that the rim isn't the only casualty in that mess...rule no. 1- ALWAYS purchase the rim and tire protection. If they don't offer it, ask for it. I have been compensated 3 times over the value of the 600 dollars I paid for it.
