Phone install in glassholder tray?
evening all - not sure if anyone on here will have done this but thought it was worth a shout.
Has anyone done a build so they can fit a phone (or other mp3 player) into the sunglass holder/ashtray in front of the gear stick? a bit like in the pic below. I don't have any sat nav etc in my car just the good old aux port however I have added a bluetooth aux adapter so it's not too bad. I just though it would be cool if there was a way to fit a spare android phone or mp3 player in this space that i can leave there and just close away, that way i can just open it up and have an app display whats playing which touch screen controls to change tracks. Has anyone done this or have any suggestions as to how it could be done? Thanks |

I've seen an insert that acts as dock for your phone providing power from the lighter socket. The phone is held in vertical position like an iPod dock. I'm not sure who makes them though but they are out there.

I have a Nexus 6, I was thinking similar but the phone fits perfectly due to its size. (Considerable)
I just added a wireless charger that sits behind it so its powered when it's sat there. Don't use it all the time, but when I do its most useful, especially with the voice commands. |

I considered leaving an Android phone permanently connected under the armrest for apps etc but, I don't drive the car every day & with battery life of Android phones being less than a day, I gave up on the idea.

It's not really though, is it? It takes a minute or so to power on. Then you have to plug it in. And do you really need it in anything other than airplane mode with Wi-Fi turned on? You're not going to be keeping a SIM in it surely? Just teather to your 'daily driver' via Bluetooth for its data connection when your too far from your house to get Wi-Fi. Let it do all the leg work on your Wi-Fi at home, updating apps, downloading podcasts etc when you're parked at home and not using the car.

Power wouldn't be a problem id wire it up to the car - really struggling to find a bracket or hinge that will pop up once I click it and I can push it back down and it clicks back in if that makes sense?
