e93 roof malfunction

Today my roof malfunctioned. Instead of folding away in the boot (trunk) it just stopped and failed to move again.

What makes it worse is that my audience comprised a group of Sydney e90post members out for a drive day.

After farewelling these guys, thanks for the lend of the phone BTW - (my phone battery was flat) the BMW tech arrived in the servicemobile. After pulling fuses and disconnecting the battery the roof refused to co-operate. Fortunately, I was about 3kms from the dealership so I drove back to the service department (slowly) accompanied by the servicemobile where the tech completed a full diagnostic test of the entire car. No codes though.

So - car now spending an evening away with the dealer - maybe it was homesick - and I've got an ultra powerful 320i loaner for a day.

Hopefully this will be a once off - so glad I wasn't a thousand K's away. Will be interesting to see if the problem turns out to be electrical or mechanical.

I'll post a follow up when she comes home.

WOW!! e93... what a day.

I must admit the 1st photo looks kind of cool. Did you get a few looks driving? Was the BMW road service good service good? I never thought you would be able to get a loaner on a Sunday. Cool.

It will probably turn out to be a tiny fault in one of the roof motors and they will fix it in 10 minutes. (Or have to order in a part and take 3 weeks).

Enjoy the 320i. It will make the wait for your 335i worth it.

Cheers.

The road service is provided by the local dealer so when you call BMW assist they send out a mechanic from the dealership who is on call that day. Its good because you get a qualified tech.

My local dealer "Worthington BMW" has a great team - I know most of them on a first name basis. Is that sad? Maybe I spent too much time there!

The sales manager "Nathan" had no hesitation finding me a loaner. I hinted about a possible drive at "Facination" or similar. He hinted that he'd try and get me on a drive day with the new M3 - that would be

Hope it doesn't take too long to get fixed. Thankfully there was no rain around.

Ahh - as they say - Shit Happens. Could happen to a five year old car. At least this way its under warranty

Life is way too short to let little things like this get under your skin.

don't know about the e93, but the e46 roof is pretty easy to diconnect and move manually... sucks though, i would prolly die if it happened to me sometimes my roof does stop half way if i do it via remote, and that is bad enough! (i just get in and do it from the dash...

did they show you how to manually move the roof? (for future referance)

News from the dealership - won't be ready today! They are seeking advice from BMW Australia as they have not been able to diagnose a fault. So for today at least - it remains in its half open/half closed state in the workshop.

No - can't find the fault - suspect one of the microswitches but they will have to test them one by one to isolate the faulty one. If not that then the control modules. The issue they are having is that the diagnostics system shows everythings OK. Normally it would isolate the problem and make the fix straight forward. Maybe tomorrow - but not holding my breath.

I'm not putting any pressure on them either - I have to go to Melbourne Thursday/Friday so I'd rather park the loaner at the airport

Update -

They found the fault today - one of the hydraulic rams was stuck. Once identified, the were able to fix the problem BUT...............when finalising the adjustment of the roof panels (done via a tool that fits into the front roof panel on the interior of the car) the tech operated the roof before removing it. Subsequently the roof folded back and the tool put a large dent in the second roof panel !!!!!!!!!!!!!

So - now the car resides in the panel shop awaiting the roof panel repair which will take at least a week. Certainly ensures I'll have a low millage car hey

Heres a pic

man...do they need to respray the whole roof ? I would be mad if i were you. Insist they repair it like new condition if not full money back or swap over for a new car.

sorry to hear that !

I know the guys at this panel shop well. They repainted by wifes e46 after it was hail damaged 2 years ago. Had to replace the roof, bonnet & boot they were so bad. You could never pick it - their work is impeccable.

Its really just another inconvenience I could do without - but its just a car after all.

I'm in Melbourne tomorrow and Friday anyway - and next Thursday I'm gonna go snow skiing - so looks like the loaner gets a trip to the snow - which means their car cops the wear and tear - not mine.

Lucky for them I'm a nice guy

it's good to hear they found out what the issues were, but it does suck about the damage

going to the snow? which size wheels do you have? cos i'd be iffy about driving in teh snow, cos i remember when i bought my car reading in the brochure that snow chains could not be fitted... but then again, if you are taking the loaner, doesn't matter!

I am impressed. I wish I can be as calm and collected as you. If they had damaged my car, I would have insisted that they replace the panel rather than fixing it. Good luck.

The last time my e90 sedan was at body shop (a month ago) the whole interior was full of paint dust. They are everywhere, the woodgrain panel felt different even after I wiped the dust off.

Considering you are having a convertible it would be more risky, because you car will probably be topless when they removed the top panel. Being topless in the body shop for week, your baby will collect lots of paint dust. Hopefully they will cover it for you.

The panel shop is Harris and Adams at West Gosford. They are a BMW approved repairer. They also know I'm very fussy - and their workshop is divided into sections - so you don't end up with paint dust all through your car. The only real issue is the inconvenience of not having the car.

Wow, hope that is the end of your run of bad luck, glad to see you are taking it in your stride though. I guess it is because you are being well looked after, and at the end of the day, that makes all the difference.
