How to find out the VIN Number from your registration plate

Here is a tutorial how to find out the VIN number from a registration plate.
I reckon this is interesting for people who are looking for a used car and want to know all the specifications or want to sell on their own car:

1. Go to http://www.247spares.co.uk/
2. Enter the registration number
3. If the details are correct right click on the screen and select "View page source"
4. Press CTRL + F and search for VIN
5. Copy the VIN number and go to http://www.decodervin.pl/

Then you should get all the information you need.

And if you want to look for recalls just go to: http://www.vindecoderz.com/

I always use the BMW warranty quote page, this gives VIN number from number plate, although it wont recognise personal plates

I have honestly no idea but I think it is interesting to see what for recalls has been made.

I think this one is for the UK: http://www.dft.gov.uk/vosa/apps/recalls/default.asp

I have a private plate on mine and it worked fine. it's great having the original options list the car came with, will come in handy when moving the car on to a good home one day.

Unfortunately that site doesn't work anymore, they have removed the vin.

Does anyone know of any other way?

Best way to do it is go to:

https://www.bmw-warranty.co.uk/Start

Put your REG in and click to quote, it'll then display vehicle details and the vin number.

I use this to check the spec and any extras fitted before I go and buy a car

All the old ways of getting this (as listed above) are long gone since the gdpr came into force

Anyone found a way? Very useful for looking up the proper spec

There are ways of doing it, you just either need access to a HPI style system, or have found one of the very few websites that still offer the number plate to VIN service.

With regards to the latter, i imagine people are very coy about giving those websites out, as high traffic will ensure that they are switched off as well ...

I have access to the former (need it for my car finance deals), so if people dont take the p1ss i can give people VINS

It's typically printed somewhere in the engine bay and/or door frame.

A Toyota-specific site will probably be more useful than this one.

Reg -> VIN

Hi Dave, is there any chance you could look up a VIN for me? I want to get a new filler flap for my girlfriend as a surprise, but the mini spares site requires a VIN rather than a reg. Please PM if you are able to help.
Cheers, Paul
