steptronic gone out and not a torn wire

I just got word back from my mechanic that my steptronic shifter went out on my 2011 e90 and was told it would be 2200 and that seems absolutely outrageous. He said that there were no torn wires and before I had popped off the shifter to look and didn't see any. Do I need to take out the whole thing to replace it or just the gear selector, if that's a possibility?

thanks
