Sunroof won't open, reset procedure fails

07 E90

Hello,
My dashboard shows me the sunroof pinch protection warning light now, and the sunroof won't open (Thankfully it's in the fully closed position). I've tried holding the button up/forward/backward for 30 seconds and it will produce a series of 3 clicks like it's trying to do something but there's no movement. OBD scanner shows A091 and A092 errors which I can clear but they come back. If it matters, all of the door windows work fine. I didn't find much on the internet other than "Replace the FZD module" so any insight is appreciated, thanks!

See if it will open and close with the emergency crank.

I would "Diagnose" BEFORE throwing parts. If you have a multimeter we can give you specific "Next Steps" to diagnose it yourself, even if you do NOT have any significant experience with electrical circuits. Attached to NEXT POST are all the wiring diagrams, Component Locations, and Connector Views (identifying pin/wire locations) you should need.

If you don't have time or interest in diagnosing it yourself, take it to an Indy who has INPA and knows how to use it, and make sure you give them the attachments, which they can view on ISTA if they have that.

FIRST thing to check is fuse F25 (20-Amp) on the JB (Junction Box) Fuse Panel. THAT is the fuse that provides power to the "A33c" Drive Unit. The motor is similar to a Window Motor, in that reversing polarity of Voltage applied to Yellow/Green and Gray/Black wires going to motor changes direction motor rotates (open vs. close).

If you don't have a proper fuse chart to identify which fuse is F25, let me know the last-7 Characters of your VIN, and/or your build Month/Year, and I can supply correct fuse chart for your vehicle. JB layout and fuse location changed 3/1/2007 in middle of 2007 model run, to early (BEFORE 3/1/2007) Junction Box Fuse panel looks quite different from AFTER 3/1/2007 build date.

IF fuse F25 is good you can test the motor by applying 12V to the two Motor Lines identified above (test with polarity each way, as it's already closed), and also test for proper voltage output TO the motor from the FZD module. Most likely causes of the issue are blown fuse, or corroded connector, either X627 at the "Drive Unit", or X14287 at the FZD Module.

If you had INPA, you could test all that in ~ 10 minutes WITHOUT taking anything apart, so let me know if you have INPA or ISTA, or have a Laptop and are interested in intalling the FREE Downloads. ONLY Cost is $45 for BimmerGeeks K+DCAN Cable to connect Laptop to OBD II Socket (if you don't have Cable).

Please don't hesitate to ask questions,
George.

Attached are ISTA ScreenPrints showing Fuses, Motor Power Supply, and Connector Locations
and Connector Views, for A33c Drive Unit, X627 connector @ Drive Unit, & X14287 @ FZD.

I checked the fuses, all good. I found a multimeter, but I don't know how to use it. Any idea what would cause the three clicks I hear when I hold the roof button in? Does that mean power's getting there but a part is broken?

I'm having the same issue, but I do know my windshield was leaking water from the bottom passenger side right into the junction box. It messed up my rear defrost relay and if I turn it on, it will stay on even with the car off and drain the battery. Took forever to diagnose why I had a parasitic drain.
That problem is no longer a problem, but now my sunroof no longer works. It will not reset either. I can open and close it manually. I'm guessing because the water in the jbe it has something to do with that.

Are the wiring diagrams, harness and motor locations all the same for a wagon? I was rear-ended and had the entire tailgate replaced and have had lots of electrical problems since and am wondering if the sunroof problem possibly related to that or just a coincidence? My 2007 328xi wagon was built in July of 2007.

NOT sure what you are asking:
1) Currently TWO sources for DIY wiring diagrams: (1) ISTA & (2) Bentley Manual;

2) I use ISTA, but it appears the paper diagrams in Bentley are Same;

3) MANY electrical changes, effective 3/1/2007, in middle of model run, particularly JB Fuse Panel Layout & E-box Contents (where DME is located under hood). So your 7/2007 build E91 electrical is same as my 3/2007 build 328xi.

4) Effective 9/1/2007, for 2008 & later E9x models, the Fuse NUMBERING was changed on JB Fuse Panel. The LAYOUT did NOT change.

5) E9x ISTA Wiring Diagrams (SSP Documents) generally show ONE System, such as FZD (Roof Module) supply, DME Supply, etc. I'll attach "FZD Supply", Panorama Roof, & FZD Large Diagram ISTA ScreenPrints to NEXT Post, as examples.

IF you will answer the following questions, I can attach ScreenPrints of relevant ISTA wiring diagrams:
1) What are Last-7 Characters of vehicle VIN?
2) Description of first 2 or 3 Faults (by system) you would like to address?
3) If ALL did NOT begin after Rear-end accident, please indicate.
4) What Make/Model Scan Tool or Diagnostic Software (INPA/ISTA) do you have available?
5) Do you have a DMM (Digital Multimeter), and know how to read Voltage & do Continuity (Ohms Resistance) Tests?

Sorry to hijack this one but I'm having a similar issue to OP and I'm looking for a download link for ISTA.

WHY are you quoting from a post made on 5/18/2021? Are you NOT AWARE that BMW has in past year caused BimmerGeeks & MEGA to remove their Links/ Server Sites that contained INPA & ISTA Downloads?

Hope you can find someone who has those downloads and is willing to share. OR you could ask BMW -- I'm SURE they will be GLAD to help you with your 18-year-old BMW.
