Do I need to change water pump when changing belt?
Hello,
Just wanted to ask if it’s necessary to change water pump when changing my car belt? Because I heard some people said that you have to change it when installing a new belt kit. |

Why would you ever need to change the water pump just because the serpentine belt went out? On these cars it is electric, so it never interacts with the serpentine belt. You need to change the belt and tensioner as preventative maintenance, but it has nothing to do with the water pump.

Please provide Last-7 Characters of your VIN, and I will check ISTA for any information on YOUR Coolant Pump. DETAILS matter. George |

I started a similar response. But I decided to check RealOEM.com first. I did not check the diesels. But the E91 outside the North American market is available with the N43 and N46 I4 engines along with the N52 and N54/55. I thought the 4-bangers would have belt-driven pumps, but they have electric pumps. Both the N43 and N46 look to be derivatives of the N52 with 2 cylinders removed. Now interesting is the Asian Market N64N engine. It has a bolt-on belt-driven water pump in place of the electric-driven bolt-on water pump. I can only think the Asian market cars have different emissions regs where a belt-driven pump replaces an electric pump. Yet, it is still a good question to ask the OP. |

I've managed to change that belt w/out removing the fan (but haven't done the kit). The water pump and thermostat replacement is a challenging under taking for the inexperienced but something to consider doing while you're in there depending on when (if ever) it's been done. You can view youtube regarding many repairs including these.

I've NEVER seen an N46 (which some posts indicate may have mechanical pump), or an N47 or other Diesels which appear to have mechanical pumps. LOTS of different engines in ECE market. "We'll See" (IF OP responds ;-). Unfortunately, ISTA is NOT very helpful on mechanical Coolant Pumps, or at least I haven't found the secret search yet.

Question:
Even if I mean "IF" it was a belt driven water pump why would you replace the water pump just because a new belt is being used for any engine...??? Seems like a lot of work to replace some Iron, when a cheap rubber wearable bit gets swapped out. I can see if it was tied to the timing chain/belt but that's not the question. I mean am I missing something or is this whole thread moot..?? |

I did them at the same time for access + required disassembly reasons, and so that I could splash coolant everywhere before putting the new belt on.
