Bad experience buying a corgi puppy local-LONG
It started with me telling the wife about a corgi puppy that was in the same neighborhood that my mom lives in. She mentioned it to her youngest daughter (13) and we went by to see it. The daughter wanted one and they wasted no time (mistake #1) finding one about 40 miles away (that was two weeks ago from sunday - June 7)
The place did not look as neat and clean as I thought it should - but I didn't say anything (my mistake 1). The mothers and fathers ( I generally don't use the word Bitch or bastard even when talking about dogs) were in real small pens that had only dirt for the surface. The puppys were allowed to run around in the backyard that mostly had grass growing. Only one of the 4 puppies was a good size (I think they were like 8 weeks). The others were kind of skinny. The owner said she 'just wormed them' :/ So, my stepdaughter found one she really liked and when the wife asked if she wanted to look some more, the step daughter said no she really wanted to take that one NOW (bbzzzttt). Within like 2 days the crap started getting real soft. (should have taken the dog to the vet the very next day - mistake X by this point) By 5 days it was almost water - and even showing signs of blood. Trouble was, the oldest daughter was graduating from HS that night and there was like a house full of 12 relatives. The entire time the dog would continue to eat well and be real lively. They took him to a vet Saturday morning and he was diagnosed with coccidia http://www.peteducation.com/article....2+1622&aid=727 - Its a parasite that is transferred from the soil (or even the parent) and for young animals (with weak immune systems) it can be very dangerous. They gave him an antibiotic but sunday morning (1 week ago), he was just about dead. We rushed him to the local vet school and they said he had gone 'septic' - effectively the parasite had moved from the intestine to the blood stream. They said the odds were 50/50. He would be there for at least 3 or 4 days (at a cost of 1-2K) but if they got him stable (could require plasma) he should be ok. Well he died thurs night. Cool little dog. http://s626.photobucket.com/albums/t...5ownrtx/puppy/ The wife wants to look for another - I said we really need to check any place out first. Talk to the vet that the owner uses. Find some of the brothers and sister puppies that others have bought and talk to those new owners. In short, much more of an informed vs spur of the moment decision.

If you haven't contacted your local Animal Control group, the ASPCA chapter in your area, and the Better Business Bureau, you really need to do so.
You are correct: The bastidges are running a puppy mill, and are ripe for an animal-cruelty prosecution. Vermin like that shouldn't be allowed to live, let alone breed (children OR dogs). |

Of course, she said she had NEVER had this experience previously. But that does not help my wife being out 2500smakers. But I might suggest something for this breeder for a little more oversite. Sounds like she was just in it for the $$ - not really ANYTHING else.

Dude. There are a lot of breeders in Texas and DO NOT buy a puppy from a breeder that won't guarantee them for a year. It might cost you an extra 100-200, but it will save you the heartache and medical bills. Aside from that, get pet health insurance right away. You can get it as cheap as 15 bucks a month. http://www.petcareinsurance.com/ is where my dogs have there insurance from.

Sorry to hear that. It's never easy to see a much loved pet leave this way.
Rescue a dog from your local shelter or dog foster organizations next time. It's the right thing to do. |

Yeah, they had less than stellar results from fostering and shelters. No pets they wanted this time from the local shelter.
And just about 3years ago, they had fostered three black lab puppies. They ended up getting parvo soon after they took them in and had to have IV fluids administered (not to mention all the other things associated with parvo), twice a day for like 2 or 3 weeks. And one still died. Then a cat they had got hit by a car and had to have a rear leg amputated. That was like 1500. Their luck with pets has been like the ultimate fail.

Wow. You let a puppy suffer through diarrhea for 5 days. Perhaps, you aren’t responsible enough to own a dog.
For anyone else reading, when you get a puppy you should take it immediately to your own vet. Yes, even before you go home. |

Hindsite is 20/20. The purchaser and others said that was not abnormal for the worming condition.. glad you have such vast experience - Im sure I will consult the off-topics forum next time.. maybe when I need to see a proctologist. With 3 different people taking the dog out (and the primary one being 13 yo) its kind of hard to know what follows behind the dog. But thanks for your compassionate response

This decision was made by my wife who has been involved with raising dogs since probably longer than you have been on this earth.
Should it have been taken - YES, that is known. Why was it not? - because someone made a mistake. If you think I need your input to tell me what I already know, you are mistaken. Find another thread to 'contribute' to.

Ugh - sucks He had beautiful coloring. I have two corgi's myself... best dogs ever!
I know it wasn't your doing but if you decide to get another, definitely spend a couple extra bucks and buy one from a reputable breeder and the pup is AKC registered. This will make sure your dog isn't inbred or from a puppymill. You also had some good thoughts about checking with the vet and stuff. ________ Ford B platform specifications ________ Buy No2 Vaporizer Last edited by stimpy; 02-18-2011 at 05:17 AM.. |

Coccidia is a relatively common infection for young pups... Has to do with stool ingestion. When I first picked up my dog from the mall, he had minor coccidia, and I took him to the vet immediately where they gave me antibiotics... Dog's great now.
I think you waitied too long on this one. His stool was getting soft by day 2, and you waited until day 5 when his stools were basically water with blood to take him to the vet? wtf? It doesn't matter if the mill was legit or not... when you picked him up, he was lively... and the infection was completely treatable. Just goes to show, if you let a pup die like that, maybe a dog isn't in your (or it's for that matter) best interest. |
