Guess I'd just have to bite the bullet and replace the whole thing. Bright side is I'll have a spare alternator to tinker around with.
Same mate, here's a video of mine running on just the battery around 12+v and then I pull over and turn the car over and then it goes back upto 14v

And again, just like you this is the car running at 14.3v and it's rock solid

In the UK you can pick up a Lucas alternator for £298.48 ($391.47) and fitting really isn't too hard to be honest. You just

disconnect negative battery cable,
remove auxiliary belt from alternator pulley,
disconnect power and glow plug relay cable from alternator,
remove top and bottom alternator bolts and then carefully pry it out,

installation is just the reverse.

The hardest part is actually aligning the holes back up, the bottom hole has a sleeve that snuggly fits over the engine mount so it's quite hard to align it just right, but I'd say put a bit of grease on it would have been far easier.

Unfortunately for us down under its only direct bmw or generics. Just have a brand new one ordered from bmw for AUD1800, which kinda suck. I'll definitely give it a try. Cheers for the pointers

Alternator swap fixed it for me. Considering the windings, bearings and brushes looks fine, I'm guessing the voltage regulator shot itself intermittently. Before the fix, I've noticed that its more prevalent on cold days (< 20 degree by our standard) or maybe its just in my head

This sort of thing happened to me on my last E90 330d, after buying an ebay OEM equivalent alternator. Sometimes it wouldn't be charging but after a few weeks, it would always get to 14V+ albeit a few seconds after the start.

After having one of those dreaded charging fault messages on the cluster, I invested in a USB lighter socket charger with a built in voltage monitor. I didn't want to be stranded in an awkward location with a dead battery. Only drive off if the alternator is actually charging the battery.

For info, this issue was more likely from a cold start in the mornings.
