Bouncing wheel noise when going over bumps
Hi all,
I've got Koni FSD+Eibach installed a few months back and I just realize these noises I've heard was not normal after I switch back to my stock 17" wheels. The noise I am hearing comes from the rear right wheel and it only happens when I go over small bumps. The sound I heard sounds like a fast bouncing basketball - 'thung thung thung thung..' on each bump (I think my wheels are bouncing) . I am not sure anyone has any experience with this. Other than on bumpy roads, I don't hear anything otherwise. Thoughts? Thanks. |

You might want to look at the mounting points where your shocks are mounted. You might have a loose bolt. I had this on my Jetta a while back after a local shop installed some new performance shocks.

I think i will try tighten the bolts tonite. I found Long's DIY on the rear struts install after I posted this, I thought I have to practically take the seat out to reach the bolts, fortunately I don't, so I will try do it tonight. Weird thing is, if I have some people sitting at the back, I won't get these noises.

Based on what you stated, you probably do have some strut bolt loose. The noise probably goes away due to added weight by your passengers. The bolt won't rattle when you've got that weight on the rear.

When I installed my coilovers I also had some clunking sounds going on (like a metal clunk sound), and it was due to not torquing down my struts enough. I would look into that. You can access the rear struts by removing your trunk liner. If you then jack up the rear corner where the noise is coming from you can hold the strut itself to keep it from spinning while you torque down the top nut.

Eh...I just PMed you about this..LOL....didn't check here first. I have the same exact problem. It seems like it keep spinning while I try to torque it down. How did you hold the struts and torque it down at the same time? |

when i installed my springs i had the same problem with a clunking sound. i found that it was the nut that sat right on top of the hat underneath the black cap.

Mine is a more subtle sound, not clunking but sound like when u held up your wheel in the air and let it drop on the ground and it bounces, those kinda bouncing noise.....very weird.........

I PM'd you back... KW recommended that I use a rubber strap wrench, but that was useless in holding the strut while you torque it down as it would just spin. I also tried a high powered impact wrench, but it still spun. I ended up using vice grips with a ton of rubberbands around the mouth so that it wouldn't scratch anything, and that was the only thing that worked for me.
