This is why everybody needs low side external PCV if they want clean valves.

There are quite a number of posts about externalized low-side catch cans, both on this forum and N54tech. A typical observation is 2oz of oil every 500 miles or so, which is pretty much what I see. That oil would have been deposited directly onto the intake valves. It's not that the low-side catch can design is brilliant- it's that the BMW PCV design is so poor. Although I do not have photo documentation, I have already reported here that the difference in build-up over 20K miles is readily apparent. That means, while I cannot provide a quantitative assessment, I can assure you that that the difference is very easy to see. I consider this improvement well worth $200. PS: just to be clear, the device I've installed is the one from Rob Beck |

The consensus I've come up with is that it prolongs the interval between walnut blasts by a good margin...I don't think we can expect them to extract all of the oil from recirculating, can we?

The kit OP is talking about is this one... https://www.rbturbo.com/rb-n54-external-pcv-kit There's a really good thread documenting the install and some observations with the kit...search for external PCV. |

The piping on mine is much bigger than RB setup so likely more effective as far as flow goes. Mine actually collects significant amounts of water but I run e85 Last edited by halik008; 06-12-2019 at 06:18 PM.. |
