It was for a customer. Had some hurtles but ended good. No lights on dash. Runs and drives smooth. Biggest problem was waiting for backordered parts from Germany. I used stock parts for a manual 535xi..

this was somewhat common on 90s hondas and acuras. relatively simple, and parts were plentiful, so it didn't cost much at all. In the end, it was pretty much all factory. But with the way newer electronics are integrated into everything, and typical BMW pricing, it's probably a lot more expensive on an E90.

I might buy a wrecked 328 to turn into a track car...only downer is that its auto.

What model getrag would need to be swapped into a 2007 328i? I was thinking about swapping in a 5sp since the 6th gear is useless on the track.

I was having the same exact thought for my 320i.

But it might be the cost vs benefit analysis that should take place.

Is it worth it?

Do you that kind of money to blow?

And all the work being performed on your car. Someone would have to know their shit to make this work. Parts and Labor $$$$

Head tech at my shop told me that the swap is possible because the fitting (connector) for the ECU connector to transmission are the same for manual and automatics.

I don't understand how the dynamic traction control would be affected if at all?

Off the top of my head you would need
Getrag 6MT
Bell housing
Drive shaft (?) U joints?
Crossmember mount
clutch assy. (pressure plate, disc, & throwout bearing)
tubing
master cylinder
pedal assembly
shift linkage assy
plugs for the transmission cooling in the radiator.

Possibly you would need the DME from a loaner?

Considering a rebuilt installation of a automatic can run around 6K. An industrious and technically savy person can locate a donor vehicle and conduct most of the work himself.
Have you ever done a manual conversion?

I've done one on a 94 Mustang that was given to our shop for the purposes of being built for a drag car. Unfortunately was an automatic but we thought we should go for it.

Doing the manual swap was a total PITA. I wouldn't ever do it again, unless it was circumstances like the one we had - free car, cheap transmission and cheap parts because it was an old car.

OP, just sell and buy a different car if you want the manual. I guarantee you it would actually be cheaper.

I think some of you may be overestimating how deeply integrated the electronics for the automatic trans are into this car. Take the wiring harness for the engine trans module away and you really just have a Siemens MSV 70/80 that needs reprogramming. You may not even have to take it to a BMW dealership to get everything coded. Anyone with an Autologic should be able to take care of it.

I agree, the thing I would be most concerned of is having the DME(Engine ECU) and EGS(transmission ECU) updated with the new VIN once the swap is complete. Other than that it's just updating the VO (vehicle order) and coding the modules so that the vehicle "knows" its using a manual instead of a automatic.

But having said that, alpine135i says he did the swap without changing the ECUs so it may be a lot more simpler. Maybe the car just needs to be coded with the manual transmission option in the VO.

The DME will probably not need much of anything done to it. They're two separate control units. The biggest thing that needs to be achieved is to have the immobilization system aligned and the transmission control unit programmed to your vin. If an Autologic isn't capable of doing that, (I'd be shocked if it wasn't) a dealership can get that done.

I'm sure this idea has crossed the mind of every auto owner. Not worth the headache imo.
I'll just pick a little e36 5spd and have fun with that

my shop (MNC Performance) did an 08 535xi auto to manual 6sp swap last year. kept the awd and all. besides the obvious mechanical swapping I removed option code 205 from the VO and got rid of the transmission harness, wired up the reverse switch to the lamp module, also I had to wire up a few things like the clutch swith to the dme and the cas and then run a few wires from the dme to the cas. I did everything programming using ISTA/P but theres a lot of hurtles with ISTAp you need the VO in an Xml file and in order to install it in the car you also need an activation code whuich I got from a friend that works at BMW headquarters. over all this customer spent around 6k.

Thanks for that feedback! I was hoping that the change in the VO would suffice.

I'm considering doing this in the future, putting it in "Manual" mode is annoying once you get to climbing a steep hill.

VO coding is much simpler with standard tools (NCS expert).
