I had been having issues with the engine malfunction indicator showing up everytime I went for a long drive. So finally i dropped my car off at the dealer to get this rectified. I get a call from my SA saying that the camshafts on my car needs to be replaced. Do you guys have any idea what must have caused this??? Just curious to know...

I think I've heard of a least one other person having camshaft issues. Try a search...

Both my friend and I had to have our "camshaft bearing ledges" replaced with about the same number of miles. If you take off your oil cap, you can see the cam has a metal shroud around it. It was that part. I hope the new one is better, because without warranty this would be a $1800 repair!

On the M30 engine, there was a problem with the oil sprayer bolts (banjo bolts) working themselves loose, causing poor lubrication of the camshaft. It was not uncommon to have to replace cams but it usually didn't happen till around 80k miles. Finding the root cause is critical, otherwise you are likely to need the repair again. If they admit to a bad batch of cams, that's one thing but just fixing it without an analysis is unacceptable, in my opinion. Regards, Adnan |

I bought the car with 27 or 28k on it, and changed the oil shortly thereafter. I then had a factory change at 33k. I plan to change every 6 or 7 k from now on (with the miles I drive, that'll get me to the one year point for a free change). I didn't see the engine while it was apart, and don't know what you mean by crusting. They didn't know what the root cause was. I have a 100k warranty, so if it happens again I'll make 'em find the root cause.
The failure happened shortly after I got the car, but wouldn't cause a CEL unless I was driving hard. Car was completely stock. I never "get on it" until the oil is up to about 175 degrees, and usually warmer. Before that, I generally drive like a grandma, shifts happening between 2000 and 2500 rpm. No idea what the prior owner was like. |

I also had my camshaft replaced...I had a 12/06 build E92. They also replaced all the assoiciated VANOS components as well. (Vanos 1, Vanos 2, Vanos pulse wheel, cam shaft ledge, intake camshaft) and many more parts!

Had my camshaft ledgers replaced @ 28K miles, 10/06 build. Was getting VANOS error codes when scanning with BT. No problems since, now at 31K. Good Luck!

these cars are literally falling apart. When I bought my 350z in 2003 I really did plan to keep it basically forever. I always wanted a z growing up. However I had the crank-shaft replaced, 3 transmissions replaced (problem with synchro's, my 4th one was rev.12 so it is similar as our HPFP issue here = no fix), cd player/radio replaced, hatch springs replaced, fuel tank fill-line recall/replaced, etc. All under 5 years and under 50k miles...
Well I sold it when the warranty expired in 2008 and bought this car. I figured it is a "legendary quality" BMW I really could keep. Looks like this car is going to be another flop  |

Add me to the cam bearing ledge group. They are trying to stick me with the full bill as well despite the SIB 11 02 08 depicting this as a growing problem on bone stock cars
 I pay to play, was honest with the service department, and will fully pony up for anything that I break or wear out prematurely with my mods, but this is complete BS. Cam wear has absolutely nothing to do with power production as we all know.

Getting the same thing done to my car after it threw a CEL under mid-hard acceleration. Car has 27k miles on it and is a March 07? build. I honestly would not keep the car past the warranty because it just feels like I'd be asking for trouble. It's a blast to drive though.
