2010 335d oil change

Getting ready for the first oil change in the 335d. I have 1800 on the car now and will get the break in oil out. I know that there is not real break in oil in the car but the filter is really what needs to go. Having a hard time deciding what to use. Always have run Mobile 1 in all my cars. And I used Mobile 1 devac for my diesel VW. I see BMW recommends Castrol but will they use Castrol edge if I let the dealer do the change. I don't see BMW LL04 on the label of the Castrol edge 5/30 the manual calls for. I see there is a Castrol edge turbo diesel for diesel cars and I think that maybe a better choice. Mobile 1 esp is made for diesels and lists BMW LL04 on label, and I would really like to use that but then I will have to buy it and bring it with me to the dealer for oil changes. What is everyone running and what will the dealer use. Oh, I still can't find any reference for how may quarts the 335d uses, anyone know for sure.

The dealership won't put in any oil other than their own for obvious warranty reasons. However the dealership has Castrol SLX OE 5-w30. It does not have LL04 on the bottle but I believe it does when bottled in the UK and it has MB 229.51 which is more stringent per Lubrizol. http://sas-origin.onstreammedia.com/.../PC/index.html

IIRC in Europe/UK and Australia there is a Castrol Edge 0w-30 which is LL04 and replaced the SLX OE, but it's not sold in the US.

Mobil 1 ESP 5w-30 is as you know is BMW LL04, MB 229.51, and VW 507
Mobil 1 ESP 5w-40 is MB 229.51 (more stringent than LL04) and the oil is very close to the 30 weight ESP.
I know some of the TDI guys use Mobil 1 TDT, but they're all worried about tappet and cam wear.

Some other Low/Mid SAPS LL04 oils:
Motul LL04 5w-40
Motul X-Clean C3 5w-40
Pentosin Super Performance III 5w-30
Quartz Ineo MC3 (Solaris LSX) 5w-30

Personally I'm in the process of compiling prices and I haven't decided which way I want to go.

As for oil capacity. 335d takes 7.5 liters.

Note: Unless it's imported specialty oil I don't think there's any Castrol oil sold in retail stores within the US which is LL04 approved other than what you can buy from the dealer. (ie meets ACEA C3)

Looks like I will use Mobile 1 esp 5/30. As far as I can find it takes 7.5L or 7.92qts of oil. I live in Texas and it's hot here and I worry about 5/30 in a turbo. So what I will do is switch to Mobile 1 esp 10/40 at 50 thousand miles as the engine breaks in.

For Houston I'd try to use a 5W40 or 0W40 that's LL-04 rated to provide high-temp protection.

As you can see there isn't a huge difference between the 30 and 40w.
I'm assuming you mean 5w-40 and not 10w-40. BMW only recommends 5w and 0w oils for non-M's. Also remember some 30 weight oils are really heavy and some 40 weight oils are light so the difference between the two particular brands can be insignificant.

Pepboys should have it. Hell you could probably drive down to Baytown and buy it as it's coming out of the tap.

Bump.

So has anybody found a good local source (reasonably priced of course) for Mobile 1 ESP 5W-30 (I live in California but we have Pepboys, Walmart, and other common stores)?

Do you replace the oil filter element with every oil change?

These filters seem to come in packs of ten and cost $150. Maybe a group buy is in order.

Is the correct part number for the LL-04 oil: 71227823541?

$7.99 for the M1, and I buy my oil filters from the dealership (<$20/ea). I've heard some BMW dealerships sell the Castrol SLX <$7 so you may want to give them a call.

I ordered my provisions from Tischer. This is what I got:

07510037195 OIL 5W30 DIESEL 8 $8.70
11427788460 Oil filter, 3 series, w/ diesel 2009 1 $16.65

Now I just need ramps.

Okay. I did my first oil change with the supplies noted above. To date, I had two dealer oil changes: 13,552 miles, 24,682 miles, and now my own change at 29,379 miles. Hopefully the next dealer change will be around 35,000 miles.

A few things I learned:

1. If you are using Rhino ramps on the front wheels like me, before you open the drain plug, remove two 8mm bolts and loosen other ones holding the back of the bottom engine cover which holds the trap door access to the drain plug. This is because when after about 2/3 of the oil is drained out, because of the angle of the car, the oil starts to run down the bottom of the oil pan and onto the bottom engine cover. By loosening the 8mm bolts you are allowing it to leak out without flowing onto the other cover beneath the transmission. Then, after you are done, you can put a rag in and wipe the oil off the bottom cover through the seam you opened by removing the bolts.

2. The engine holds a lot of oil. Have another container prepared in case the one you have is too small. Dont wait until the one you are using is completely full before switching containers, once your first container is very full it is very hard to slide it out of the way without sloshing the oil onto the floor.

3. The filter is on the driver's side of the engine and it would be easier to take off with a large socket than the adjustable wrench I had. The plug is the same 17mm that is on the 335i engine. It would be best to have a ratchen and socket for the plug, it would be hard to access it with a wrench because of the bottom engine cover.

4. There top engine cover has a round access plug on it which rattles a lot. You can eliminate this rattle by pulling it up a bit on one side.

Good luck.

Or you could use this and never worry about ramps again.

It's hold 8 liters which is enough for the 335D and you can get all the oil out without problem.

Wow. That is awesome. That should evacuate more oil, eliminate messing around with the drain plug and putting the car up on ramps. The only thing I wonder, though, is if it would evacuate any heavier metal particles as well as letting gravity do it's work. Nevertheless, for a car under warranty and in-between oil changes, that device is the bee's knees. Definitely getting that before I do an oil change again.

Nevertheless, for a car under warranty and in-between oil changes, that device is the bee's knees. Definitely getting that before I do an oil change again.
If you run up the engine to almost operating temp anything floating around will be suspended in the oil (larger particles should be caught in the oil filter).

I did a change and the engine took a full 7.5 liters. In anycase you're always going to have some old oil remain. Think about all the guys who have a 335i with oil cooler. That oil isn't getting drained out either.

Great find on the 5L bottle. Opening 8 double sealed oil bottles along with the risk of knocking them all over with the domino effect was a little intimidating.

Based on BCube and others who have shown the oil list, I have Castrol Professional SLX OE 5W-30 but it does not say Powerflow.
Does that mean that Castrol Professional SLX OE does not meet LL04 specs?
Quite not sure, if someone knows can please advise.
Thanks

You have it already? Then look on the back, and if it doesn't say LL-04 it isn't good.
