looking at putting some winters on my car, got some 17x8J wheels

What tyre load etc should I have.

thinking:

225/45 R17 94V XL

All round, but then looking at the "tyre" sticker inside my car and on some of the configurations it favours XL on the fronts but not on the rears. Ideally I want XL all round so the wheels can be rotated as I want this set of winters to last 4 winters (with rotation).

Others options are:

225/45 R17 91V

or I can go down to "H" rating but that seems pointless.

get atleast a Y rating. You shouldn't be doing 130+mph on winter tyres anyway. surely the conditions wouldn't allow it.

You don't need XL..

Some people say XL helps with "turn in" compared to runflats. The winter I'm getting are non-runflats

Apologies if this has been asked before but can someone advise tyre pressure for vredestein wintracs for the front (225/40/18) and rear (245/40/18) please. I have changed the rears from the standard 255/35/18 to the 245/40/18.

Driving to work this morning, the tyre pressure warning light came on, I am hoping that the chap at the local tyre shop did not inflate correctly, hence the warning light. If it is not then a small leak somewhere!

Did you reset the TPMS system after putting the new tyres on?

You have to do that first for any change in wheel / tyre / pressure.

Check your pressures - set them to the rating plate pressures for your original size, reset the system and try again.

so in my world the sequence would be:-

1. Check pressures
2. Inflate tyres to original OEM fitted tyres
3. Reset TPMS

Can you advise how to reset TPMS or is this in the handbook?

Set the pressures when cold then from memory on idrive go to service, vehicle settings, tyres... reset tyre monitoring system

I just put the upper limit in mine as per the door frame sticker for the size

i dont have an idrive system, I will inflate to correct values (2.6bar front & 2.9bar rear) and see if warning symbol disappears

The pressure warning system works on speed differential between the wheels not actual pressure. It is in the manual how to reset, it is an option from the left hadn side stalk on the steering wheel. Basically you scroll through the options till you get the TPMS reset option select it and then drive off. it is important to drive off to let the system reset.

E92 here. For winters I have (second winter now) Falken M+S HS 439 225/55 on left over 16" BBS ET34 rims all around. 16" just clears calipers, 17" is better IMHO. Yes 225/55 is one size large tyres. Front looks ok, back is less due to 255 ET37 vs 225 ET34.
But car does move on winters with confidence where it would go no-where on summers. I run sticker tyre pressures for M+S two persons, plus 0.1 bar, and i drive it 90% alone but sportive.
Ought thing is car seems much more quiet, except for suspension noises, eg when you hit a bump.

Have now fitted the winter tyres.

My old summer tyres were Bridgestone Potenza RE050AI Runflats:-
Front 225/45 R17 91V Rear 255/40 R17 91V
The new winter tyres: Front & rear: Continental WinterContact TS830P Contiseal 205/55 R16 91H (130 mph rated)

Not a five min job as the alloy wheels were hard to get off. Had to lower the motor on loose bolts & raise again which all takes time. The ground clearance was too low for my hydraulic jack, had to use the BMW rachet from the jack kit which is a bit of a slow bis. But after a while one developes a nice wrist movement!

Had to wire brush the end of the hubs , they were quite rusty. When I replace the summer tyres I will have to repaint.

After fitting the wheels the thought then occurred were the tyres unidirectional? On checking it would seem not! Phew!

Tyre pressures I left same as the r/flats 34 psi front & 36psi rear.
Never realised how huge the 255 tyres are. They are big! Noticed the rear tyre wear was more than the fronts. That searing acceleration from the lights I guess and haven’t done 10k yet. I will have to control myself!

A trial run in the motor and the winter tyres (ContiSeal) do give a smoother & quieter ride than the r/flats, there is no doubt! . Less road & tyre noise, the thinner tyres must help a lot. On the bends the steering is not quite so positive but the grip is good.
All in all I am well pleased.

The supplier of the tyres and steel wheels: mytyres.co.uk who seem an efficient organisation.
They arrived within 7 days of ordering from Germany and were in perfect condition with the wheels nicely sprayed a sort of satin/gloss black. Have no connection with: ’ mytyres’. Would certainly use them again.

I have attached a couple of before and after photos. I must admit it’s a bit hard getting used to the blacks wheels but I suppose they go some way to match the ‘Shadowline’ exterior bits, but I guess I will be pleased to get the 17” alloys back on.
Just looking forward now for a bit of snow n ice to appear!

I'm really not a fan of sticking shit looking or older model
style rims on E9x just for winter tyres. Get a decent set of rims or just stick the winter tyres on your current rims.

just fitted vreds on current wheels, look awesome with their lovely tread style. Now after some new wheels 8/8.5J's for the summer tyres in March/April.

Steel wheels to my mind are the most practical when driving in wintery conditions. They are that much cheaper and very easy to keep clean!

Really not a fan, sorry. I just cannot see the point in having a great looking car and putting what looks like 4 spare wheels on. I wouldn't dream of putting those wheels on my car but if you're happy that's the only thing that counts.

the vreds have protection for rims...that can only help, but with winter tyres on anyways, there should be limited risk in hitting kerbs.

Ewww steelies. Why didn't you just find some SE spec or lower spec alloys and put them on? If I was to put winter tyres on I would just put them on my originals. Luckily for me we don't really get much snow living down South West by the sea so I've never seen the need. I just run the same tyres all year.

Great looking car. I had Dunlop RFT winters put on my stock wheels and went for custom on the summers. I normally do my own winter/summer change over. I bought a 2 tonne jack - it makes the job a lot easier. The sticky wheel lugs are a problem because of the impact wrenches that tire shops use. The problem is getting enough leverage to undo the lugs. Before run flats, I used to keep a length of steel pipe in the trunk slips over the tire wrench and give you lots of leverage!
