Cheapest BMW to insure in the UK?

I was wondering what would be the cheapest bmw to insure in the UK? It might be possible to get one as a first car, not for me just something I’m interested in haha

Non are cheap for youngsters. My son wanted one but the cost was silly so had to wait until he had 2 year ncb. He has got an E46 320i touring (he had to have a 6 pot &#128514 which is just over a grand a year still. As said, the cheapest is going to be a 116i I would have thought. He keeps getting quotes for all sorts of bmw as his next car and the prices are all over the place. For my e92 330d it’s over 3 thousand pounds but an E39 540i is £1500! Go figure!
Just find cars of interest on eBay and use the reg numbers for online quotes.

Get at older one and insure it on classic insurance. There might be a minimum age limit for classic insurance tho.

My son has got a classic mini in the garage. They wouldn’t give him a classic policy on that and the normal insurance was ridiculously expensive when he was 17! Like I said, it seems there is no rhyme nor reason to the cost of insurance so just set up a go compare thing with all the details then just use reg numbers of potentials for getting quotes.

I think you have to be 25 for some classic policies, I guess its to stop young drivers getting round having to pay higher premiums

oh wow! thanks for all the replies! The lowest insurance group auto I think was the 218i or 216d active tourer loll. I will definitely have a look into classic car insurance, ive been hearing a lot of good things from them!

Just get loads of quotes on different cars, sometimes the one you least expect will be cheapest. At 21, i paid £580 to insure my Z3M, that was £200 less than my 328i Sport and £2k less than an M3 Evo!!! You'll probably find something like an e38 740i is cheaper to insure than any of the modern BMW's.

Going back to my son who’s 19, he got a quote for a 330d like mine and it was over £3k, he then got a quote for a z4m and it was £1500! Just doesn’t make any sense to me!

1 Series should be the cheapest. But I had similar priced quotes when comparing 3-Series and 5-Series.

I'd reckon it'll be something weird like an E90 330i. It's an uncommon car but with a lot of standard components. It'll probably be even cheaper with an SE instead of an MSport

I believe it's all down to the statistics and it's not even down to proportional statistics.

If there are more 116i's in the country then more of them will have had accidents. So they're more expensive to insure.

If, when an accident happens the 116i is expensive to repair then it'll be more expensive to insure. BMWs are more expensive to repair in general, the quality of fit and the complexity of the engineering means the parts cost more and they're more difficult to fit if the tolerances are out.

A 330i is rare enough that fewer of them will have been crashed but they're mostly the same as any other E90. So the repair costs will be the same as any other E90. It might be the case that a 630i is more rare than a 330i but they're a more complex car so repair costs will be higher.

It's why a Z4M is cheaper to insure than a 330d (Z4M's are rare and lots of commonality with the Z4, 330ds aren't rare at all).
