I obviously have a public sector pension (nothing private in addition yet), and can retire next year (age 38) with a gratuity of 3 x annual pension, and the pension payable immediately. It's not enough to live on but if you want to do something else it's a bloody good deal.

dont get one they are all pretty poor.

Invest in some buy to lets. A little more work but the overall return is MILES better.
