Overall volume. The Helix/ATM is a small intercooler compared to the ETS 7", VRSF 7" or VRSF 7.5". The VRSF 7" HD is larger which allows for better flow, has a denser fin pack which offers more surface area for overall heat dissipation and it's a couple hundred dollars less. It also has 2.75" ID inlets whereas the ATM has 2.25" ID inlets. Smaller tubing creates restriction.

Your making a sales pitch lol which is fine but know one was comparing the vrsf cooler to another.

Bigger doesn't mean better by any means especially when shopping for an intercooler

Just to be clear (the ATM has a 2.5" inlet not 2.25)

The first few inches of an intercooler core does 75% of the cooling so that extra half inch is pretty pointless on a 7.5" cooler. The frontal sections is the single most important & having a extremely thick intercooler can actually be worse.

I'm not trying to argue with you so please don't take this the wrong way but I'm not going to comment on the 2.75" vs 2.50" pressurized inlet especially on the N54 as it will just start a pointless debate.

All the intercoolers mentioned above are pretty good.

Please measure the inside diameter. It's a cast end tank with a 2.5" ID coupler and 2.5" OD. The ID is 2.25" due to the wall thickness.

The overall volume is incredibly important in any heat exchanger, especially when you're upgrading turbos. The 7.5" stepped FMIC VRSF offers is double the overall capacity of the Helix. It's not just depth, it's a taller, stepped core.

Not taking the car apart to measure , real world results is all that matters to me & again its kinda retundant especially when you have a turbo that has a compressor nozzle that measures just over 1"..

I could debate some of these things with facts that you have mentioned especially the ID size & it's importance on this car but again won't solve anything so let's agree to just disagree on some of these things & there order of importance.

I've viewed enough logs & personally logged many different intercooler setups including your 7" intercooler & I'm pretty content with my choice.

Your 7.5" cooler is probably really nice but again know one said anything about comparing & you seem to have something against the Atm cooler or company.

Can you post some factual comparison of how superior your intercooler is vs the Atm & others? This would be the best selling feature for you guys.

I would be up for doing a fair comparison on my car on the dyno here if you guys are up to it?

I run some of your products on my car one is 3.5" exhaust which is very nice & I recommend it to many of people so I'm not biased at all.

You'd want to compare the 7" HD to the ATM, the 7.5" race isn't a fair comparison because of it's larger volume. Here's a log that might help. Your ATM IAT goes up, the HD goes down.

Definitely not how my car logs & definitely not what I've personally seen in the past with your 7" cooler at all when doing a full pull not in 3rd gear like above but 4th.

I'm up for doing a fair comparison on my car, on the dyno with logs all done in the same environment on the same day & it's about 40 degrees here right now so we won't compare your 40 degree log to a 98 degree ambient temp log.

I won't compare just 1 3rd gear pull to a 4th gear straight pull like you just did

That wasn't my log it was from another car, my car logged better even though that log I posted was really nice for a full 4th gear pull to redline on stock turbos etc & averaged roughly 3 to 4 degrees above ambient.

Anyway let's take this to PM if you want to set something up, instead of getting off topic in this thread & please don't take this the wrong way (again I like & run many of your products)...

Oh bloody hell I should have realized this as I do design/engineering for a living Thanks for pointing it out.

I could not find the spec of what Wagner used to make their EVO line black, so that disqualifies them.
Ambient Thermal Management's black is powdercoated, so they're unfortunately out.
I could...
A) Get the ATM or VRSF and get it professionally anodized. This may be difficult as some of them already have some "anti-corrosive" coatings and I would probably risk voiding the warranty.

or

B) just go with the most easily available option: ER. Which comes in a type iii anodize (bonus: strengthens the fins).

And so I ordered the Evolution Raceworks (Top Gear Solutions had the best price at time of purchase). I wasn't a fan that it's bar & plate (compared to what tube & fin construction offers), but their posted independent testing results showed it worked well.

If VRSF or ATM (or hell Wagner) are reading this. Please offer a black anodize in future (even at an added cost, like ER did).

Thanks to everyone who posted in this thread (I read it all).

As for VRSF Race intercooler, are the fins painted with that anti-corrosive paint like the rest of the intercooler?i have the Vrsf regular 7" and doesn't look like the fins or the bar/plate is painted, just the outer shell is.

The 5" and 7" stepped are painted in a light coat of silver finish. The HD and 7.5" Race are completely bare.

The HD and Race FMICs are uncoated in order to offer the best in heat dissipation. It also allows customers to have them anodized locally. Powdercoating/painting reduces efficiency.

So what’s the best intercooler for Pure S2 100% e85 pushing 650-700whp? My old 5 in Forge Fmic is really struggling at the end of 4th on a hot 35 deg C day. It can go from 90f to 130f at times. Need to connect my meth again. Just waiting for a cm3 jet.
