A draw in the opening game is not the end of the world, we looked good and i'm sure we'll progress comfortably.

Why do we (England fans) actually keep thinking that we are actually good? Heskey is a lovely man, but a shit footballer, Crouch the same. Rooney, a great goalscorer, but not a great scorer of goals. Our Goalkeeping situation, what the fuck? I can remember when we chose between Nigel Martyn and David Seaman and James was a joke then. Now, Jesus. Green? Point proven. Lampard might as well not have been on the pitch. It would be SUPER easy for you all to jump on my back and say I'm negative and a twat etc, but that performance, as with so many before, was not good enough. Fuck it. I picked South Korea in a work sweepstake and watching them, every player is ten times happier, ten times more determined and ten times more proud to wear the shirt than our set of clueless dimwits. Maybe I should support then instead? Matt |

Careless mistakes might cost England, you might never know the other two teams might sneak another draw game.

Your post was a great example of what i've been reading for years now, and your follow up more so. The USA ARE no mugs you're right. But they are a bunch of players who regularly fail to play for crap teams or are in the process of being sacked by the likes of Watford. Their world ranking is based on the insanely easy CONCACAF or whatever it is group which essentially makes them and Mexico look better than they are. The mere fact you're happy to accept that nerves got the better of us against what is essentially a Championship team sums up how crap England have been for about the last ten years. Does anyone remember how we shambled our way through the group in 2006 before barely beating Columbia in the last 16 to record a better place than we deserved when we finally went out, or how we didn't even qualify for Euro 2008... And you think 1-1 against the USA is ok? Actually youre right. It is ok. Because England have been so staggeringly shit at football for the past fifteen years that perhaps we should get real about who we can and cannot beat. Matt |

We were nowhere near good enough and sadly its a bigger problem than just Heskey or Green. Nothing wrong with any of the players we started with (OK, if Milner wasn't fit he shouldn't have started), but we're playing 442.
All night I watched Rooney pulling back into all kinds of positions looking for the ball. He does that when he's getting no service up front and is trying to get a move started to do the midfield's job for them. We were flat and unimaginative, and formation suggests the manager hasn't got it. Remember Sven who played Plan A Italian style with no plan B? Am suddenly worried about Capello..... |

Of couse we could have done better but this is only the first game, i'm sure France expected to beat Uruguay in their first game as well but this is the World Cup and the only thing that matters is qualification to the next round. As for the USA team being made up from players who do not play for top clubs i agree with you, however it didn't stop them from ending Spains 2 year unbeaten record last year in the confederations cup (a full strength Spain at that) with a 2-0 win.......and Spain are the favourites for the World Cup. With regards to Capello - he has the best % record of any England manager....ever, so i will reserve judgement on him until after the World Cup has finished.

Solution? 4-5-1 so we're not overrun in midfield, Gerrard just behind Rooney, where he is best for Liverpool. Also solves the Gerrard/Lampard problem. Why oh why take off Milner (in fact why play him if he's been sick all week?) and replace him with Wright-Philips? WTF?? Joe Cole surely? Finally (OK I'm a Pompey fan and biased) it HAS to be Jamo in goal. He should be our number 1. PLEASE don't let Capello turn into another fruit loop England manager (a la Hoddle, Keegan, Ericsson and McLaren)! Mike. |
