Magnetic oil drain plug

hey guys has anyone switched out their oem oil drain plug for a magnetic one? I want to switch mine out but looking for recommendations. I heard the ecs tuning magnetic plug is no good and I'm currently looking at the mishimoto one from FCP Euro has anyone used that one before? if not what would you recommend?

Yep. I've replaced all my plugs with magnetic - engine sump, gearbox and diff. Mine were made in the US. Can't recall who. Can look it up if you need it.

Just playing devils advocate here but what types of wear metals are you expecting to pick up with a magnetic drain plug? What parts of your engine would be likely to wear that would be picked up by it?

Better off doing a blackstone oil analysis(or whomever you prefer) every oil change if you want to learn about the condition of your engine. They are inexpensive enough and potentially informative.

Magnetic oil drain plugs are a bit silly and I would consider a waste of money. But they are cheap, if it makes you sleep better at night get one.

But what if you drop your oil plug in the drain bucket?

Got a mate with an n52 which for the last 30k miles has shown little metal bits in the oil filter. No idea whats causing it, engine runs and sounds fine. Unless you cut open the filter you'd never know they were there. A magnet wont pick them up because they are aluminium - like most of the engine.

Yeah the motor is mostly aluminum and magnesium. You won't be picking much up.

Get an oil analysis done.

If you really want one, Dimple makes a good one, and I think ECS had a decent one too. Changing out your oil at the proper interval is a better plan though.

I bought a ECS one for no other reason than I was curious and was paying for shipping already for some other parts and impulsively got it. I've probably done about 5 changes since and every time there is a VERY slight buildup of metal "dust" on the magnet. Nothing that makes me believe in the concept to be honest.

I mean, think about it - if the magnet is picking up anything significant due to metal on metal wear, the damage is already done and your engine is probably toast.
