Indie for battery coding near Downer's Grove
Hi all! My 335 is going to be 5 in December and so I thought I'd preemptively replace the battery before I get stranded at the office downtown 25 miles from home. I priced out doing it myself but then thought I'd give Bill Jacobs a call to see what they'd charge. Imagine my shock when they told me they wanted $500! I did a little more research and apparently they battery has to be coded to the computer with a special tool or else it'll dramatically cut the battery life. Are there any indies near me that will do this? A replacement battery is $180 at Pep Boys. I'd do it myself if not for this computer thing. We just moved out here from the city a few months ago and I don't have a local shop yet, so I figured I'd ask the board. Thanks in advance!

If you get a battery with the same specs as what's in there now u can just reset the battery adoptions and that's it. Only time coding is needed is when it's diffrent specs

You have N5x Motorsports in Wheaton (ask for Beso) and Zima in Bridgeview (ask for Stefan) Both shop can do it for you. I'm not familiar with other BMW shops by you.

Replacement OEM is under $200 at the retail parts desk, may be less with CCA discount. (none of the online guys will actually ship it if you order). The easiest way would be to get the exact same battery, so just grab the part number off of the battery, new one should be the same type (Lead Acid - White, AGM - Black) and Amp Hours (on the label). With no price difference, I decided not to mess with an aftermarket battery with different fitment and basically no actual amp hour labels (which is the value the car gets coded to).
If you're going to be up around Arlington Heights soon after, you can use my scanner for the 30 seconds it takes to register the new battery for free. If you don't have one, I would recommend just grabbing the Carly setup or the Schwaben/Foxwell scanner to have around anyways. |
