Any chance there was a bolt dropped inside the motor somehow? I've seen this happen on a Toyota Land Cruiser once where the guy dropped a bolt in there when doing a valve cover gasket (didn't realize it and thought he lost it). It dropped to the bottom of the engine pan and sat for months, only to be jostled around on hitting a hard bump and then it got inbetween the gear and chain and caused the chain to break. Just curious if you had looked at the engine yet to see if this is a possibility. I've never had a cam chain snap. Stretch, yes, but never snap. Doesn't mean it can't happen, but I'd think there is something else going on there as a root cause of failure.

Are you looking for X5 motors also? They may be more common. E6x is also an option. Probably would need to swap a few things such as oil pan as you don't have x-drive. Block, head and all internal parts are all shared for M57 E90, E70 and E6x

Loose cam caps? Did someone change a head gasket recently and not torque them properly? Weird....

I'd guess that the force of the pistons hitting the valves after the chain failed is what lifted the cams and broke the rockers etc

Looking back at other chain breaks. They go hand in hand. Camshaft takes the beating. Bolts stretch🤷*♂️? Idk. But every chain snap has loose cam caps and busted roller rockers

Makes sense. I’ve never had one snap, but definitely had them stretch to where you could hear a clacking sound in the valve train
