Exclamation $5,000 mark-ups on 335i coupes?!? (Bay Area)

Just went in for my 15,000 mile check-up to Weatherford BMW in Berkeley.

Since I'm looking to "upgrade" to a new car in the coming months, I walked around the dealership and noticed they put $5,000 mark-ups on all of their 335i coupes (or as they like to call it, "market adjustment").

now, i know the convertibles are rather hard to come by (though they have a few of them sitting on the lot) so *some* mark-up or maybe just no discounts would be normal there. but coupes??? that's just ridiculous.

i don't think the coupes are in such a high demand or short supply right now. or are they??

Coupes have been in stock for months, but Cali is crazy like that. Let's put it this way, if they have multiple cars on the lot then the markup isn't justified.

Yeah I find that pretty interesting as well. Some dealerships have crazy markups (or market adjustments- what ever you wanna call it). Can you believe they have a $3,000 mark up on a Honda Accord?? Not just that but pretty much all the 08 models they have on the lot.

If you want a good deal on a BMW let me know and I can refer you to my CA and he'll hook you up.

well, i didn't even get a quote. they wanted me to order the car first. that's when i ran out of there. i like to know everything up front. i hate doing it this way (order the car, way for it to come and then negotiate the price).

i told the guy it's ridiculous they marked them up because i know there isn't a shortage of them and he said if i'm interested he can erase the mark-up. this simply means they're trying to make the cars more attractive than they really are.

that's just crazy! and it confirms my previous theory, they're just trying to create an artificial proxy for demand to inflate the prices. we all know cars, across the board, are not selling well right now.

i so want to tell them to shove their false practices up theirs...

Could it be BMWNAs response to the tanking US Dollar? Us Canadians are having a shit-fit up here because of the pricing discrepancy, however with our cars being built in Europe it isn't that conversion which matters, it's the Euro->CAD or Euro->USD. This is, of course, assuming that BMWNA actually does buy from BMWAG in Euros, as one exec was quoted as saying here in Canada. Perhaps BMWNA is finally adjusting to reflect the fact that one American Dollar just dosen't equal a whole lot of Euros anymore?

I nearly bought an Evo about 3 months ago at Concord Mitsubishi. They had a $3k markup on all 12 of them that were sitting on the lot. Now, these were all 2006 models remember.

They asked me to throw out a number and after 15 minutes I had them down to invoice -$500. I didn't buy it because in the end the sales guy was an a-hole and was high pressuring into buying the car without a test drive.

Markups mean nothing, never pay them. Crown Chevrolet always has Chevy Aveos with $3k markups on them. Right... because I'm going to pay $3k more than MSRP for a piece of junk that is hardly worth it's MSRP.

I think coupes still get sticker in the bay area. When I ordered mine Weatherford was giving 1k off on 335 Coupes. Since I was ordering the car I got the same deal local to me so I took it. Since then I know several people that have looked seriously and sticker is the best they could do. 5k over is silly, the markup games that some dealers play don't every get my business. If I see that extra dealer sticker on the window I just leave.

That is very interesting, the euro has gone from 90 to about 144 in about 4 years. Thats a 37% increase, BMW has raised the prices a small percentage every year but nothing close to 37 percent.

i think it's more than just currency difference that goes into the formula of calculating prices in different countries.

realistically, the US is nowhere near to being prepared for European car prices. i don't see anyone here paying $50,000+ for an entry level 3-series.

but with the speed our economy is declining, we may be paying those prices before we know it...

Crevier and Irvine BMw here are both marked up $3,000 and also have cars with Aero kits already installed for an additional $4,000 (front and rear).

You might want to ask Vi Quach over at BMW of Fremont to see if he can give you a good price on a E92 335i. He gave me a pretty good deal on my E90 335i.

sedans are usually produced in larger quantities than coupes. that's why it's more likely to score a good deal on them.

thanks for the tip though! i definitely want to stop by as many dealerships as possible before making my decision.

if you can swing it, i think it's a great deal! around here, it's hard to get an E93 335i at MSRP.
