Yes, they are wider. The CV's are wider and so are the shafts them selves. Also Uses 12mm instead of 10mm bolts.

M3 LSD

Hi Guys,

Just done the complete rear end on my 335...seemed the easy way to do it?

4 bolts for the sub-frame
2 for the shocks
removed the the the prop at the transmission end 3 bolts and 2 center bearing

Brake lines/ hand brake cables and sensors.

Attached are a few pics...

Made a jig for the prop so there were no misunderstandings with the fabricator!

I bought the rear end off a kid who had front ended his un-insured M3. He was breaking it and his mum had told him to get rid of it or she would...so £300 ($400) depending on Exchange rates...yes it was a cheap! Bought the M3 propshaft for £100 ($130) off ebay and another 335 prop for £60 ($80) and had the fabrication done (cut and balanced) £210 ($275). Wanted the option of doing everything at the same time hence why the 335 prop so it could be fabricated before swap. Discs and pads were around the £280 ($360) if I recall. It did come with M3 shocks (they have a different fitting to the 335) but went for coilovers all around, HSD were happy to supply 335 front and M3 rear.

So around the £1000 ($1300-£1400) for the parts, plus HSD coilovers

'06 have bolted diff so I strongly recommend you to install LSD into your existing diff instead of going the M3 route

Why? M3 swap can be had for cheaper than and aftermarket diff and you get beefier components all around.

I need to educate you on m3 LSD? Beefier isn't necessary stronger and better. Viscous LSD has short life. So yes, hypothetically you can have m3 LSD installed for cheap but chances are it will be old, high mileage unit and if isn't already dead it will soon die from the torquey turbo engine. I wouldn't consider m3 LSD with over 50k. Do the research. Find me low mileage m3 LSD and add up the numbers. Then we can talk.

I had an E92 M3 few years ago and I find my OS Giken LSD in my 6MT 335i much better now than the M variable LSD in the M3. My 2's, not talking about the biggers axles etc...

Of course, but unfortunately the forum community is mostly clueless about LSD and price point is the basic determining factor. Installing used m3 LSD that won't work is absolutely OK since most won't be able to tell the difference. They won't consider OS Ginken at all since they can have 3 to 4 used m3 LSD's

My OS Giken was around 2k euro including machining the ring off (swap with a pre machined unit), installation, new seals and new oil. The return is massive, it's the first thing any 335i needs IMO. But if you don't know better it seems a lot of money but again, totally worth it! After owning a previous car with a LSD, having a car with inside wheelspin was horrible.

If you want some evidence, me drifting on youtube movie for example:

I'm going to be the exception to the rule here and the M3 diff was just a piece of the puzzle, the puzzle being a complete M3 drivetrain retrofit with the M3 GWS, Drivelogic, and M3 DCT GTS software, M3 KOMBI, DSC, and SZL, with hopes of functional MDM and Mdrive with a modified IKM0S ROM.

If you just take the M variable LSD alone, yes it's one of the weaker LSD units out there, the bonus here is the seriously stouter driveshaft and axles that mate up to the diff casing. The diff is bolted and there's a huge variety of gear ratios available for it as well as any number of aftermarket LSD units. I was lucky enough to find a like new unit, 30k miles, that had just been sitting in this local guys garage and he wanted it gone, $350 later it was in my garage. I spent the extra $ for a custom gear ratio and full rebuild while my guy was in there so I have $1300 in it and another $700 in the DS and axles, both with 13k miles on them. I'm at 500whp/550wtq and I know it won't last forever but for a guy that only puts 7k-8k miles a yr on his car it will last a while. All I know is with PS4's on with open diff I could smoke them through 3rd. Now it just hooks with a minimum of spin and gets it. Like I said, my situation is different from most but I have no regrets so far but like feuer said if you're only in it for a LSD there's better options than the M variable.

And if anyone's interested in a complete 335is DCT drivetrain, you know where to find one now.
