E92 328i 6MT - Tranny rumble?
Hello everyone... thanks in advance for your input!
I have a E92 328i 6MT coupe with 44k miles on it. Over the last 3000 miles, noticed a subtle rumble coming from the car when I come to a stop. When I roll to a stop, around 10mph or less, there is a short lived, 2-3 second faint rumble sound coming from the front of the car. The sound is similar to the sound made when trying to take off in first without enough gas, however, without the jerking/shuddering. I cannot constantly reproduce it. It seems to occur once the car is fully warmed up and the A/C is on. I cannot constantly reproduce it, but when it is occurring stop light after stop light, if I turn the A/C off, it goes away. Again the sound only occurs when I'm slowing/coming to a stop. A/C and all other transmission functions in the car work well and I have not noticed decrements in any of the other transmission functions. Any and all help is appreciated! |

Does the clutch being engaged or not have any effect? Is there any rpm fluctuation that you can notice on the tach? Does it matter if you are actually on the brakes or not? With your hood up can you hear any rattles or odd noises coming from your compressor or belt tensioner area?
Seems like an odd one. |

Have not tried to recreate it without depressing the clutch as I don't want to stall out the car at a stop light. Have not noticed any RPM fluctuations. Have popped open the hood with several BMW mechanics of late and no sounds from those areas. |

wonder if you engine is slow to settle into an idle when the drivetrain is unloaded... and is having a hard time with the ac compessor.
know anyone who can check for codes and clear adaptations? |

It's manual. There are no adaptations.
Anyways... what you are most likely hearing is a gear rattle. It's normal. You can "fix" it by playing with different transmission oils etc. Unless rattle worsens, I wouldn't worry about it. If it does, then you might have a bad throwout bearing. |

UPDATE
The fix for my issue was replacing the front tension strut bushings. Hope this helps someone in the future!
