If I was going to buy an old hot hatch then it would have to be the 'original' a Golf GTi in Red - ideally a 1983 Campaign version:

For the time they handled and went so well - they were fairly austere and by modern standards they didn't look at all special but equally they weren't over complicated or weighed down by tons of electronics, they just did everything you asked of them.

Lots of fond memories of cars from that period - the Alfasud 1.5Ti Green Cloverleaf I had was also a cracking little car - 4 cyl boxer engine, twin dellorto's (one throttle per cyl) and the mag alloys - not one bit of rust either.

Alfasud 1.5 Ti Green Cloverleaf:

The intergrale is not beautiful no, its does look very agressive and fit for purpose which i like. The 944 is just ugly.

All my opinion.

Handle better? You can just do some minor work on even a fwd Ford hatch and they can handle very well. The old Datapost S1 went rather well back in the day.

STeve any pics of your old motors? I love saff cossies what year was yours? when is it you had them? fookin awesome dude.
Have you driven a 944?

IMO while it's not a pretty car it's not an ugly one either.

I'm amazed the Golf Gti MkII 8v hasn't been mentioned yet

I had a 1992 J reg in Atlas Grey with the original BBS RA wheels - a truly beautiful beautiful car. Was totally standard, in immaculate condition, and I did a very happy 30k miles or so in that. I actually preferred the 8v to the 16v, because although it wasn't as fast, it was much easier to drive quickly more of the time than the 16v, whose power was all at the top end and you had to rev the nuts of it to get anywhere.

Build quality was brilliant for the time, as reliable as any Japanese motor, and much more discreet than the XR3i and Astra GTEs of the time...

Really like the Mark 2 Golf GTI. One of my mates at the time did his Uni Gap Year at VW and brought a few home at weekend. The 16v was very top end but between 5 & 7k revs it really did shift.

He also brought home the first Corrado in the country in that Custard Yellow and a G40 Polo which was a super pocket rocket.

15" stealths! Had em on my first BMW E30 - got it from Autovogue when he first opened it up. All kitted up in white with TSW stealth's on it, lol!

Those were the days!

Had a few mildly warm and hot hatches from 18 years. Fiesta Sport and Fiesta Supersport were the mild, but also had two RS1600i's which were the hot. The first in black had a Richard Longman ECU. They were the guys running the Datapost Escorts in Touring Car. Went like hot shite off a shovel and would 'do' standard R5 GTT, RS Turbos and most other cars of the day. The second in white was a little milder with just breathed on head, cams and exhaust. Loved those Escorts and in hindsight should not have sold the last one. Still have spare ECU and twin coils in my basement. Working units are becoming hens teeth.

my bro had a rs1600i and it used to whip my old superchipped xr2i, He loved it, but his glory was short lived i moved on to r5 gtt and showed him some 1.4 turbo power lol.

He the bought an xr2 and dropped in the rs1600i engine, never had a play. Then one day my gtt running 15psi, around 160bhp had a short squirt killed him, will never forget that moment

Back in the day the Escort XR3i was the one to get. I remember a mate of mine being given one as an 18th birthday present in white! Git! It was a real pulling wagon for a set of 17 and 18 year olds! I drove a Pug 1.9 Gti and loved it. Another belter was the VW Corrado VR6! Bloody loved that car. I also ran a Honda CRX. Cracking v-tec engine and bloody good looking.

To Porscha...FFS stay on topic can't you? If it isn't bloody classics you start ranting about 944s . I've driven a 944S. Bloody great car...but that isn't what this particuar thread is about. Wind your neck in and think before posting. It's no wonder people get fecked off with you. Just for once I'm with Carlos on this one!

To be fair, to start with I thought the OP was looking for a car to buy, so I suggested for the same money as one of these hatches you could get a 944, personally I don't see a problem with that? Why not have something better for the same money? I won't have people who have never even driven a 944 call it because they don't know what they are talking about. All IMHO it's a great alturnative and I think I originally posted why.

While I don't deny I should think before posting I don't think it is JUST my problem on here.

Didn't explain myself - I think it looked special to the discerning minority but not to the majority. Those who were in the know saw it as something special but to joe public it was just another Golf - it was very germanic in that sense but for me that was part of its appeal.

I agree with Tony though - the Mk II was probably a better and more grown-up proposition but the purist in me would always hanker after a mint Mk 1. I also agree with him about the 8v/16v - the 8v was more tractable than the 16v in daily driving.

It was a cracking little car - very charismatic and very under-rated. Always remember my first drive in it, bright cold autumn day, leaves blowing over the road and me blasting along some of the country lanes on my way home - beautiful drive.
