Hi every one, Need help with steering lock issue.
My son 320D (2008 model) was put to smash repair due to minor accident claim. After the job was done (about 1 week) received the phone call from workshop saying that the car finished, but there was an issue, the message display that steering locked, and car unable to start, they get their mechanic to do diagostic scan and said the steering column need to be changed. And because it's not the accident related I have to pay for it, if I want to go ahead for them to do the job. However, just cut the story short, after contact my insurance regard the mater with no luck. I have to tow the car home, call my mate come over to check.
The message said steering locked, turn steering to start the car, also there's the sign of the yellow steering with the the arrow on top pointing to left and right (not the one with the padlock). Try turn the steering but still can't start. Charged the battery to full as it getting low when get back from workshop. (Battery just 1 yr old and been install and registered by BMW specialist, together with the new comfort access module). try to reset the ELV using tool32, still no luck (look like inpa unable to communicate with CAS). Physical removed the steering lock (completed off), order the ELV emulator and install, still no luck. After reading fews post regarding this issue, I think may be my CAS been lock up due to too many low voltage startings (which I found out they did at the workshop to move the car in and out of the workshop)and need to be flashed and/or software update, then ELV reset.
Is it anyone out there in Sydney that got the right tools to do it please PM, I'm happy to pay for the work as long as it work. Or if you know any mobile mechanic can do the job please PM me as car unable to start and I don't want to tow it to the workshop if I don't have to. Car is in Yagoona, Bankstown area.

Thanks to all members with all the helpful posts.

Hello all,
This is my very first post on this forum. I wanted to share my experience. I had the same issue with steering wheel lock warning sign appeared after I replaced old battery that died on me after being parked for a couple months. If I knew that it's a bad idea to let it be parked and not being driven for awhile, but It's my first BMW so I've learned my lesson here. I got a refurbished battery, installed it, and then tried to start, but instead I got the warning sign. I researched the possible causes. A big thanks to this forum, I purchased OBDii-USB cable, installed Mike's software pack, and plugged my laptop to the car. I used Tool32 to clear two EVL jobs and registered battery. The steering wheel lock warning sign disappeared and car started. I'm glad it worked for me. Thanks again, guys! You are awesome as well as this forum.

P.S. my next job is two rear O2 sensors replacement.

This is my first post I am having similar problems after leaving the car standing for a week went to start it and had an orange steering wheel with arrows left to right above it symbol on dash no ignition unable to start. Codes read A103 and A114 Tested battery and discovered it to be shot
Replaced the battery with BMW original and registered it with inpa and used tool 32 to reset the ELV counters cleared all codes. Still the same problem
So purchased a ELV emulator removed steering lock and fitted emulator reset ELV counters again cleared codes. still the same problem
If i disconnect the passive go module above the battery i can start the car and lose the fault on dash
Is it the module or something else causing this?
I am not that good with these things was wondering if anybody has had a similar thing happen?

Does the Tool32 reset work if you can't get ignition on due to an ELV fault?

The ISTA ELV counter reset also only works if you can get ignition on because it won't even proceed to scan without ignition on.

Yes, the times when I reset the ELV counter was from cars that the ignition wouldn't turn on at all. Try Tool32 instead

Hi Guys,

I have had this very same problem at work. (I'm a Mechanic) Took me about 4 hours and lots of testing and scoping BUS signals, but long story short it turned out to be a short in the outer door handle sensors, (Comfort Access) If the car starts when you unplug the Comfort access module or "passive go" as it says on the module, it will be one of the front door handles i reckon. The rear ones don't have sensors in them. Try removing the door handle on the drivers side first and unplugging it, then try start the car. It's not hard to remove the handles. I know it sounds ridiculous that a door handle can stop the car from starting but trust me on this one. Here's the instructions on how to remove the handles. https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/e...-front/HoWBr0g
Let us know how you get on. Very keen to hear if this is the issue

Locked Steering Wheel Issue

So I've had the locked steering wheel issue for the past 4 months or so. Luckily I have another car to get me around.

The car will not start, the dash does power on and I can hear some type of mechanism activate when the key is inserted. When I try to start the car I get nothing (no crank or noise) and the steering wheel remains locked.
I did try the emulator and still the same results. I did notice the battery drains itself if I leave the car for a few days so a lot of time I just end up unplugging the battery. I ended up taking it to the stealership just to get a professional evaluation and they of course told me I need to replace the entire steering column for only 1296.50. I don't have that kind of bread laying around so was getting close to the point of scrapping the car.

But reading through this entire thread I'm going to look into ordering the OBD2-Usb cable and getting the needed software on the right computer and seeing if I can figure this thing out this weekend. I appreciate all of your post so far and would love any extra opinions before I get started this weekend.

I actually had a flat battery over the weekend (due to a new POS ebay spec trickle charger ) and due to the low voltage i could hear the steering lock clicking unclicking constantly.

When I charged car up with my other charger it come up with the dreaded steering lock error, but alas I could start and drive my car.

Apparently you can reset the ELV using winkfp software, but I had a fellow forum member code mine for me remotely.

Maybe you can ask one of the guys in the coding subsection to code this for you?

Otherwise the tools to do a EVL (steering lock) reset are described above
Good luck

Fixed Joe's car by running steuern_elvcounter_cas_loeschen and steuern_elvcounter_elv_loeschen in Tool32

Start up Tool32, select CAS.prg and double click on the two jobs. CAS will reset after job completion.

Was a bit worried when first connecting to the car as the CAS would not allow the ignition to be turned on. This can cause all sorts of issues when coding/diagnosing using INPA so I wasn't sure if the tool32 scripts would run.

After running the two jobs we heard a thump from the car and the CAS unit reset. Upon ejecting the key we heard the sound of the steering lock disengage. Tried engine start and we got the familiar sound of n54 cold start with downpipes!

Came across this document in ISTA regarding the ELV counter. Unlike some BMWs, our cars will disable the igniution and prevent engine start when the ELV counter has reached maximum. This has obviously happened when the battery died with the key still in the ignition. There was probably enough power to power the processors in the CAS system but not enough energy to activate the steering lock. It attempts a bunch of times and you can't start the car.

Can't say I agree with the design, seems a bit dumb that the counter persists after power cycling.
I have this steering lock issue and have tool32 etc but the problem I have is that the 2 Steurn_evlcounter jobs to run are the only 2 that do not appear.
everything else is listed except those 2.
Now what?????
Any alternatives?
