Fault Code 0029CF

In Sept I was driving down the interstate suddenly the car starts feeling like it’s running on 5 cylinders. Sounds like WRX (unequal length headers) and way down on power. I exit and at bottom of ramp it’s idling really rough struggling to keep running. “Service engine soon” light is on. I’m hoping I can limp the last 2 miles home. As I pull away from light I get a loud backfire and then the SES light goes out and car runs fine. I pull codes next day and get this:



The car was running fine afterwards and although the code didn’t come back I replaced all the coils that week cause they were 80k miles anyway and I figured a bad coil had to be the issue. (The plugs are about a year old, replaced them myself maybe 15k miles ago.)

So it’s been about a month no issues until just now cruising on interstate same thing happened again. Almost the same place on the interstate lol. Car runs like garbage and then after maybe 2 miles the SES light goes off and runs smooth as silk. Pulled codes again same code 0029CF, “Misfire Detection Cylinder 3 in 2 Firing Order”

What’s up here? What would make cyl 3 fire in the wrong order? Or is this just a general misfire issue? Bad injector?

I just fixed a leaking valvetronic motor gasket 3 days ago. Could this be a short from oil down in that #3 spark plug well?

I peeked down inside that plug tube when I did the gasket swap and didn’t see any oil in there but maybe it’s worth looking closer

Eh start with the basics. Coil have a manufacturing defect.

Turn the motor on and pull the plug going into each coil 1 by 1 and see if/when the idle DOESN'T change. That'll 100% narrow down the dead cylinder. Should be cyl3 like your code says.

Then swap cyl3 and another working cylinder's coil pack and see if the misfire follows.

Being in Florida all of our gaskets and electronics get cooked

Ok looking for any other insights here.

Still having this issue once every 1-3 weeks. I get a random “misfire cylinder 3 in 2 Firing order” code that always happens when cruising on highway in 6th gear around 3500-4000 revs. Always when the temps are 80-85 degrees. After driving 1-10 miles the misfire goes away and the car runs great for another week or so before it happens again.

Today it happened was right after filling up with a tank of Shell premium

Since I started this thread I have:

Replaced all spark plugs
Replaced all coils (still was there)
Swapped new coils between cylinder 1 and 3 (misfire stayed on cylinder 3)

Not sure where to go from here? Could it be a bad injector on cylinder 3?

What does this code mean exactly?

I was doing some googling and came across a thread for another platform where Carly was showing misfire codes and identifying the wrong cylinder. (Carly was showing cylinder 3 misfire but it was actually cylinder 2.).

Has anyone ever had this happen with Carly on a n52?

Can injectors be swapped between cylinders without buying new gaskets?

If you can get your hands on a foxwell 510 or 20, they can turn of your injectors one by one to see if there's any changes with the way your engine is running
