255s in front e9x non m3

Hey guys, I have a 2007 e92 328i that I am preparing for the track.

Will be running 18x9.5+35 apex arc8. I was originally going to run 245/40/18 but now am thinking about 255/35/18.

I also have to run a 5mm or 10mm spacer to clear the front coilover springs.

Anyone knows if it will fit in the front. Not sure how to roll my front fenders, they are plastic.

I’m on 18x9 et30 apex ARC8 with a 5mm spacer and -3.5 front camber I can run a 255/35r18 tire. It barely rubbed at first and has now self clearances the front fender and doesn’t rub but it’s borderline clearanced too much lol. I’ll show a few pics what I mean.

The blue arrow is where the inside has worn away. The red arrow you can see how much has actually gone missing. From looking at the side of the car it isn’t noticeable at all and the fender looks fine but any more offset and it would be a noticeable change in the width of that vertical creased portion on the entire edge of the fender. I think I’m at the max offset with a 9” rim at et30 and 5mm spacer. So effectively 9” et25 which would put my tire sidewall about the same as your 9.5” with an ET of 32. Your ET 35 with 5mm spacer would be same as et30, so just a touch more outwards than what I’ve got now.

It will still rub with 18x9.5+35 and 255/35-18 even at -3 camber as you won't be driving straight and on perfectly smooth terrain all the time. Usually at where the bumper meet the fender and the oil cooler grill.

Al, I love your ain't care attitude!

Sorry to thread-jack, but what's your front tyre wear like with camber like that? I have 1.8deg on mine, and get very pronounced inner edge wear on PS4 tyres. Geo is basically stock thereafter. Any tips? I run at or above sticker pressures and stock staggered sizes on stock 18" wheels. I guess hooning some more corners would help even things out, but I don't often get the opportunity

I'm guessing you have some toe out or do primarily highway driving?

I can go up to about -2.7 with very minimal inside wear as long as toe is at zero

The latter. I had the geo set to stock (except front camber) by a shop I trust. It has 0.13deg of total toe, according to their printout. I had run it for a while before that at my own geo (string line and spirit level), and I had it at 0.17 total toe, again according to the shop printout...though the camber was -2.33/-1.91 L/R.

I’ve been getting better tire wear since I did the full Uniballs. I think they really hold the alignment as the suspension compresses. So I’m getting some inner tire wear now with -3.5 camber and like 1/16” toe in, but this set of tires looks like they will last maybe 50% longer than my last set which were on -2.5 camber, same 1/16” toe in, and no Uniballs. I can’t say I’m getting incredible wear, I usually get like 10-12k on a set of fronts which matches what I get on a set of rears pretty much but that’s with 3-4 full track days on a set also in that mileage.

My opinion is for the street the more camber you run the more toe you want. I tried the zero toe and on my car it ate the front inside really badly.

I do my own alignments… because I like to torture myself in my driveway … and I’ve been playing with adding more toe every set of tires. I read the more toe you run the more it shifts wear to the outside edge of the tires, and the less toe the more it shifts to the inside edge. So I’m actually thinking of moving up to 1/8” toe instead of the 1/16” front toe on my next set of tires just to try and balance the wear out. You are never going to get great wear with high camber, it’s more like a battle to minimize the rapid tire destruction lol

All interesting stuff, thanks Al. I agree about adding toe in to reduce wear. When you say 1/16 or 1/8, do you mean total toe, or each side? How do you find steering response?

Milliken and Milliken has an approx conversion between camber and effective toe, I think... I'll need to try and find it.

What do you use for alignments? Parallel string lines?

Edit: Can't find the camber/toe equivalence right now. And sorry for continued thread-jack...

I’m measuring total toe and doing it with a tape measure. The steering response/turn in is obviously not as quick with more front toe but it’s not annoying or uncomfortable. Definitely can notice the difference but I’m running the same alignment settings for street and track, just a set and forget mindset. I’m enjoying the car in both settings although I definitely prefer the steering response more with zero toe it’s not a huge difference that would make killing the tires worth it lol

If you can find that info on camber/toe I would love to have a look!

I will be most likely opting for a 245. I have conti ecs from my previous tire setups and they tend to run wider, atleast more than the michelins

Is it necessary to run a spacer for 18x9 +30 with 255/35/18? What about 245/40/18?

Car's currently on bc coils -2.9 camber upfront on style 270 rims.

It all depends on the length of your springs. I have the same wheel and tire size and do not need spacers with my KW Street Comforts. The YCW coilovers my car used to have required spacers (later replaced by shorter springs so the perch sat above the tire).

I'm running 18x9 ET30 255/35 in the front with a 3mm spacer. Car is lowered with eibach pro lowering springs and Bilstein B6 struts, I run -2deg camber in the front and have my fenders rolled and I don't rub at all.

Before the roll with the 3mm spacer I would barely rub, it wouldn't rub without the spacer with no fender roll.

I have decent inner strut clearance, probably 8mm without the spacer. I'm also running PSAS4 which have pretty meaty shoulders/sidewalls.
