new to forum, and speedo question

Hello all. I spend a LOT of time on the e9 coupe forum, but I've recently multiplied my e9 by a factor of 10 and found an e90. This car (and any newer car) is much more complicated than the "older" cars I typically enjoy - and I am sure I will have a lot of noob questions. Here's one:

I see that there is an outer ring on the speedometer, and there appears to be a "needle" that hovers between 110 and 112mph. Does anyone know what this is, and what it is telling me?

Thanks in advance!
Stephen

that tick shows what speed your cruise control is set to.

I had considered that, but I reset the cruise control this afternoon (shortly before I took the photo) and the digital display in the center read "75mph" (the speed I was going when I set it). It held 75 for a while, before I turned cruise off. Is there a separate setting?

So are you saying the "needle", which you circled, that's hovering at the 110MPH mark is stuck at that position even though you turned off the cruise control?

Exactly. It doesn't seem to move or change (other than a slight wander between 110mph and about 111 1/2mph). I am beginning to believe that it is broken.

I found another post with a similar issue - someone suggested a software error.?. I don't know that I need this needle to be in the right place, and assume it doesn't affect anything else. But it is weird. To the knowledgeable eye (the folks on this forum), one would think I was just cruising at 110 all day (which may not be that far from true).

can’t help you with your issue but you might be interested to know the cruise control works a bit differently.

When adjusting the speed up or down there are two ways to adjust. A ‘soft’ push on the lever will adjust the speed by 1 mph and ‘hard’ push (to the second detent) will adjust by 5 mph.

Love the E9s! Have a picture of your coupe? I went to the Legends of the Autobahn this year and here where some great E9s our on the lawn...

Sounds to me like someone switched out the cluster and screwed up putting the thing back together correctly.

Ok. Gotcha!
Something funky maybe wrong with the needle, but if the cruise control is functioning normally as it should, then I wouldn't worry about it.
I don't really pay attention to it when I use mine.

Thanks for the info on the detent - that sounds like a great feature.

"The Raven" is at the front end of a long and necessary full restoration. She is not ready for the lawn at Legends just yet.

Thank you. I don't know if that CC needle is digital or analog, but if somewhat analog, perhaps it is just disconnected from whatever is supposed to move it. Its natural resting place (heaviest spot down) may just be where the needle shows 110mph. Perhaps I should park on a very steep incline and see if it settles commensurate with the angle of the incline - some real old school detective work. Or, I can just ignore it and move on.

Update: today I was using (and experimenting) with the cruise control. Then I noticed that the rotating CC speed indicator was no longer stuck at 110. It was gone. I turned CC back on and the indicator rotated up. Not to my actual speed, but I started to see what it is "supposed to do". I made it go up and down a few more times and it started to stick again. I don't feel I need to fix this. But I'll keep trying it and maybe it will start locating itself better.?.
