CIC unit bricked during infotainment software update -repairable?
As title,
Had the car in for a infotainment software update and it crashed!, causing the CIC unit to fail, they said before the update there was a very low risk of it failing! Either way the CIC unit is now broke and it won’t start up the screen etc? The specialist Quoted £1500 ish to replace with a bmw exchange unit (65129199905), I’m assuming as it’s an exchange unit bmw must repair them? Does anyone know if they are repairable? If so who can do it? Other option is to buy one from a scrapper and fit, is coding straightforward? Last edited by Bmw330; 01-22-2019 at 04:28 PM.. |

Sorry to hear this, seems your specialist maybe isnt so special after all
Plenty of super geeks on this forum that may be able to help: https://cartechnology.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?fid=61 Also, i've used this chap before for CIC updates: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-E60-E...R/254041830492 At £1500 for a replacement, they will be laughing all the way to the bank. You can buy a 2nd hand CIC on ebay for circa £250-£400, plug it in, code it (or just use an emulator to fool it into thinking it was in your car originally) and job done. If its software related, im sure the links above will help |

A bmw specialist was loading the latest infotainment software on it from bmw and it crashed halfway through, the sat nav now won’t boot up and the CIC fan continually runs, various methods were attempted to reboot and non worked.
I have contacted a few places and sent it off today to see if it can be repaired, hopefully it can be! |

I would like to say yes but they made me sign a disclaimer if it went wrong they would not be liable, supposedly bmw also do this unless it’s part of a recall (although I don’t have any confirmation) That version of latest software direct from bmw is prone to crashing, only found out after!
I did ask how often it goes wrong and was told very rare!, either way lesson learnt not to bother next time! |

Sorry to say that is not correct. BMW don't make you sign anything. We have had our X3 done in the past year and they didn't even mention anything about failure and crashing.
And I don't believe any software version is prone to crashing otherwise it won't of been released. Professional coders and retrofiters do updates every day, you don't hear them failing. Who was the company that carried this out? |

I though it sounded rubbish when they said it! . I did question the specialist about bmw releasing software which had issues, that isn’t good practice. I’m starting to assume it was incompetence may have caused the problem.....
I should have just took it straight to the dealer looking back now, I’ve used a few ‘specialists’ over the past 10 years and there has always been some isssue with something they have done. Hopefully I can get the CIC repaired and updated for the same cost the dealer would have charged . |

+1. Obviously this place is clearly not trustworthy if they made you sign a disclaimer. And then clearly talking BS by blaming the software.

I sent the CIC unit to the guy linked above from Sir_Dave’s recommendation and it’s reset and running again, for £100.
I can only now assume the bmw specialist either has some equipment issue Last edited by Bmw330; 01-30-2019 at 03:50 AM.. |
