Finally got my Coding/Diagnostic laptop working properly and decided to give the car a scan.........
Found the following code on the Engine

2AAF (10927) - HPFP Plausibility @ 56,992miles (I'm on 57010 miles now)

Along with a few historical ones for fuel pump and boost (not 30FF but 3100 (12544))
Most were around 55k Miles.

Hopefully it's nothing so I wiped them and will scan again in a a few hundred miles

Dann's E90 335i - 4th HPFP

So a small update.

The last few starts and at idle I've been noticing a slight misfire.
I got a code reader set up and wiped all the old codes, after a week I rechecked and had the Fuel Pump Plausability.

Not an issue as it could be unrelated.

Then comes yesterday. Start the car and it runs like arse. Misfiring, idling very rough and stinking of petrol. I figured it was a cold issue so drove the car as usual.

I did about 50miles in it and it was fine once hot, pulled like normal all the way to redline.

This morning I go to read codes again and it starts and runs worse than yesterday. This time it springs up a check engine light and stalls itself :'(

Read the codes again and got these codes.
10738 (29F2)
10701 (29CD)
10702 (29CE)
10713 (29D9)
10700 (29CC)

Looks like I need a new HPFP......again....it will be the car's 4th one. It was previously replaced at 55k. I'm now on 57k and it's been 11 months.

I was going to say that every single one of these cars I've seen when the manifolds off the valves are caked in carbon.

Also be aware the fuel pump plausability can also drop up if the cars run low on fuel, but if yours is going a bit AWOL as you've had one pump fitted already not long ago if you have the paper work to support the pump's purchase under BMW's parts warranty program should the pump be faulty and they confirm this(you'll need to book in with your local BMW dealership under warranty)the pump nad all labour will be supplied/fitted for you FOC providing the part is indeed confired as faulty Dann

Yeah it's got naff all fuel in atm but the fuel pump codes are there on the DME so it's got to be that.
Gonna speak to the dealers (original one that fitted the part and my local) I need to get some more fuel in it but don't want to drive it like this. Something is screeching like crazy in the engine bay too.

I'll update tomorrow once I've spoken to the garages.

Wow that's bad, re getting the car back to BMW if you're gonna do it they'll of course look for codes if they see the cars been run low on fuel then depending on who you dealwith they may ask the odd question.

Listening to the video there's a fair bit going on there worthy of a propper investigation codes are one thing having the car infront of you is another as these cars trust me test for paitence

I originally thought it would be injectors but the hpfp codes are coming up.
I'm planning on filling it up and wiping the codes (it still has 50miles left in it) then seeing if they come back.

Tbf there is no rules that say you can't drive with x amount of fuel in. If they blame the problem on that I'll be complaining to BMW UK about them.

I'm just really worried about driving it like this.

Your right there are no rules thing is on warranty if you get someone who wants to be difficult they could use it against you if you follow me, but if the HPFP keeps cropping up I'd go with that, but as there are other codes as well yes there could be sdomething lese going on from a leaky injector(been there seen it done it)to the pump.

Understand you're a little worried re driving it, it doesn;t sound too healthy heard worse seen worse driven in to us too my advise if is if its that bad get it recovered don't risk anything as again from facing a warranty representive they could ask "why did you drive the car when it was that bad"

Just spoken to the BMW garage and booked the car in.

Turns out there is no warranty on warranty work but my extended warranty has kicked in, so it should be fixed under that.

Just stuck 2 cans of fuel in it (11l)and started it up.
It's miles happier but still idles terribly. However it didn't stall itself and starts every time on the button with no long cranks.
Might not be the fuel pump after all but still going to BMW tomorrow.

The cloud of smoke I left behind was a bit worrying but I think it was just unburnt fuel as it cleared after a minute or two

Dann,
If it's running that badly, couldn't you call Assistance so they get a tech out?
When I had bad running, cut out a bit, there was no way I was going to drive t a dealer, or wait to book it in. Called them, they sent tech and because it was more than 1 injector being replaced it had to go in, but it went in on truck and that meant I had , immediately, a brand new 3 series loaner to home address and car having immediate attention.

I drove it in this morning and it wasn't running that badly. Had a fairly grumbly idle but nothing like the other day. Drove fine and felt fine until you let it idle for a long time.

Snows BMW in Portsmouth have it now so the worst that's going to happen is they look at it and it costs me the diagnostic charge. They are also going to check the wastegates as they rattle like crazy.

If it isn't the HPFP then I'll be getting it back and sorting it myself.

Okay, that's good to know the car's in. I had uppermost the earlier post when you were worried about driving it.
I thought reasonable diagnostic charges are always covered, be a cheek to charge for that? Clearly something is wrong.

Yeah I was (it was running like in the video) but then after 10L of fuel put into it, it ran like normal so I drove it in.

Nope they are going to charge. £86 for the hours labour....at the minimum.

On what grounds are they charging, surely it's covered under your warranty?
Very interested to know, because I start my extended warranty next week.

I am only speculating at the moment from what they service guy said.

I only took out the warranty at the weekend. Technically you can't make a claim on it for 30 days, even though they take 30 days payment straight away. In which case I can't claim until November.

I get it now. Helped by the fact I just saw your (other) post on Pistonheads.
That's low mileage you do. I'm 15k a year!

Yeah. It probably doesn't help.
Once it's fixed I'll start driving more.

My OH works down the road from me so she drives us in 4 out of 5 days. I only drive on Friday as I work 1/2 day. Then drive to play golf/visit family etc.

So got the car back.
BMW have diagnosed it as maybe needing 6 injectors, coils and plugs

I don't believe them so am going to change the plugs them coils them 3 injectors. If that doesn't work I'll do the other 3. He also said the diagnostic couldn't be completed for some reason so it could be something else. It was also commented that it may be a fuel pressure sensor.

God knows why hpfp code was flagged up.

Drive it home and left it idling.l whilst opening the garage. It idles smooth with no misfire now. Strange

Frustrating outcome.
When I had injector issues, both my basic £5 ELM diagnostic from Amazon / with torque pro app AND the BMW Tech's software identified the problem.

They should be doing this for you! But good luck in making the changes.
