Question What's with the petrol and diesel 420 models being so closely matched?

Is there some kind of push for diesel fuel going on?

420d:
Top Speed: 144 mph
Acceleration (0-60) 7.3 seconds
Torque: 380 Nm (280 lb/ft)
Cubic Capacity: 1995 cc
Power: 184 PS

420i
Top Speed: 147 mph
Acceleration (0-60) 7.3 seconds
Torque: 270 Nm (199 lb/ft)
Cubic Capacity: 1997
Power: 184 PS

The only thing they are obviously not quite matched on is top speed, torque and cubic capacity...

Is it me or does that make the choice even more confusion or dare I say tempting to just pick the diesel model...

It is almost like they are doing a disservice to their petrol models? That anyone looking at those specs... might think... diesel lower road tax, more mpg than you can shake a stick at... why bother getting the petrol model...

Any particular reason the market is heading this way? Is it that Euro Emissions thing again?

It's similar when you get to the bigger engines - the 3litre diseasel is more powerful, has more torque and better mpg than the 3litre petrol. Don't think there's much in it for the 4litre ones either.

Wonder if perceptions will change if / when they decide to look at factors other than CO2 as a pollutant to tax us on? The number of times I've been behind a diseasel when it accelerates away and been covered with a shower of black sh1te, compared to nothing when I've been had off by a petrol.

Good, good.
I mean, all the petrols do is give out CO2. That's good for plants, so if anything, we actually HELP the environment!

The E90 wasnt really any different was it?

The 320d put out 177ps, and the 320i made 170ish.

True I forgot about how those. Why would any manufacturer do that though? It is like they are encouraging diesel in a way..

Yesterday I was driving behind this van and it let out a black plume of smoke that blinded me and several other drivers. An ill maintained diesel. The fumes gave me a headache. I couldn't wait to get away from the guy and when I did the rest of the journey home was with all windows down.

Because the market is focussed on CO2 emissions and fuel consumption. People want 50mpg, low tax, and the same performance as the petrol model. Diesel provides that and as such thats what sells.

Press the recirculate button on the steering wheel when you see the reek next time!

The steering button did nothing because I was delayed in my reaction. There was a time where I'd leave it in auto. I might start doing that but apparently not recommended for extended periods.

Going by my owner's manual but even that doesn't state why. I am guessing it is not good for the microfilter to be recycling air... :

Leaving recirculate on for long time means you use up all the oxygen inside the car :P

You'd expect Auto would blend fresh air in to stop that becoming an issue though?
