Some thread there about how the F20 ECU's are being hacked and all the engines are identical bar the 118i having a different oil cooler. However, the 114i oil cooler looks better up to the job?

not exactly surprising.
why make multiple parts when one set will do the job.

they done the same with the 325D and 330D on the LCI E90 platform.

Researched a bit more and the guy is on the right note. From a 1.4 you could squeeze +118 bhp with a remap. Madness!

Exactly why I bought a 325d in the end. I initially discarded them and wanted either a 320d or 330d....(why have the additional running costs of a 6 cylinder without the power?)

Then when I realised both map to 300bhp combined with the fact I got a very highly spec, low mileage car for at least £1k less than a fairly basic spec 20d/30d I thought I would go for it. Granted it will of course be worth less when I come to sell but im not planning to sell the car for several years and in addition I'm hoping the spec will help to sell it.

They have done it for years. The e36 323I and 328I had pretty much identical engines bar a few components.

I like this trend of bmw where parts are similar, so much to play around.... Gives you much more flexibility under the same body!

BMW has barely any engines now. They have reduced the configuration a lot. It keeps cost down.

And with turbos on all modern cars a single engine can cater for a huge range of markets. You don't need more cylinders to create more power. I wonder how long the 3.0l engines will last on M and non M models. I expect the current 3 series is the last of the 3.0l for non M.

Makes sense.. But only a matter of time before people stop bothering to buy the upper models. Who knows that might actually make those more accessible?!

Drove a 1.4 turboed golf. I was hugely impressed. Its not fast like my 335i bit it is good.

No they didn't.

E9x range has only 2 diesel engine's effectively, a 2l 4cyl and a 3l 6cyl.

It's worth noting whilst the engines may be similar, and can be tuned similarly, they often have different spec other things. For example the 325D has smaller brakes than the 330D, for the standard performance.
