Changing Paddle Shift Operation

This may have been covered before, but I've been unsuccessful at finding a thread for my question.

I have the paddleshifters for my 6AT, & am wondering if it's possible to change how they shift. For those who don't know, the OEM function when pushed toward the dash, is to downshift. When pulled toward the driver, it upshifts. This happens for both LH & RH paddles.

So my question is, can I modify the paddles to where pulling the LH paddle will downshift, & pulling the RH paddle will upshift? From what I've heard, that is how the M3 is set up.

+1 I expected it to be like that till I got my car and both sides was exactly the same -_- I'd love to have an upshifting and a downshifting separate paddle

i believe there is a diy out there for doing that if you want to keep those paddles. search the diy threads or google it. However, i would recommend just upgrading the paddles. I got the m3 dct ones and never looked back. feels much better but u can't drive with one hand lol

If I upgrade to the M3 DCT paddles, it reworks the original function to make the LH downshift & RH upshift? How does it do this by just changing the paddles?

Should be direct plug and play, once you install the m3 dct paddles it will give you the desired result. It has to do with the way the wiring is setup on the DCT Paddles

I did it.
I've changed to the paddle that what you said. Just get a pair of M3 DCT paddle shift, and change them yourselves. No need to do any coding, just plug & play.

Simple answer: You will need the DCT M3 module.

That will give you what you're after

Left paddle = down shift
Right paddle = up shift

You can also change the paddles itself to after market paddles, instead of using the small OEM M3 ones. Thats personal preference, one of the first mods I did to my car.

Hey after you shift to DS and hit the paddle to put it into manual is it possible to take it out of gear and put it back into DS without sliding the stick to D then back to DS?

I know what you mean and the short answer it no.

If you're in D and you hit the paddles up or down, you're in M mode and will stay there until you Shift to M to D on the Stick if I'm reading your post correctly.

I bought the M3 steering wheel along with the M3 paddle shifters. Then I replaced the M3 paddles with the Bimmian ones. I don't think the Bimmian paddles will work as replacements for the stock paddle shifters but I could be wrong. My car is a 2007 also.

These pieces are designed to replace only the OEM aluminum sections on 2008+ M3 DCT paddle shifters. They will not fit the push/pull type shifters on your 2007.

The M3 DCT shifters already have a decent sized aluminum paddle IMO. Install them first then decide if it's worth changing the paddle sections. When the DCT shifters are replacing the original push/pull type, no re-wiring is required, the connectors are the same but have two wires, instead of three, already in the correct locations for left-downshift, right-upshift operation. They don't quite fit flush against the back of the 335i sport wheel but unless your very picky it's a non-issue.
