BMW E92 325D DME DDE DSC - Battery Underwater

Hi,

I have purchased BMW 325D (2008) M Sport RHD from an online auction. When it was towed to me

I have noticed a lot of lights on the CIC (CIC is retrofitted).

The warning messages I am getting:
1. Gear can be engaged without brake!
2. DSC Failure! Drive moderately
3. DBC Failure! Drive moderately
4. FTM System Error!
5. Start assistance inactive!
6. Steering assistance inactive!
7. Fuel Pump!

Started with the battery. It appears that battery was 1/3 in a water. Drained all the water

and dried the storage. It looks like before nearly all of the battery was underwater.
I have changed the battery controller that goes on top of it but there is still same issue.

I thought there could be issue with CAS which I have sucesfully flashed with WINKFP but the

issue persists.

ISTA D is throwing load of errors and most of them are DDE related. It also shows that

DDE/DME and DSC unit is not responding but when clearing faults they sometime start to

respond.

Does anyone have any idea what this could be? Faulty DME? Badly remaped?

Any suggestions welcome, car seems not to be drivable.

Thanks

Be sure to check tha amp area for water.

The BSD line that comes from the Battery by was of the IBS aensor is
shared with a number of modules including DSC , TPMS, Water pump and
alternator. A BSD line problem on one of them can make them all look faulty
with loss of communication to all caused by one .

Thanks!

I will change the negative cable (with IBS sensor) tomorrow.

Apart from that, where could I find cable explanations as to which I should check? And how can I test that cables/connections are working as they should?

Thanks

Is your battery actually ok?

Check the connection to the JBE. The JBE is. Gateway to the other modules. Also just double check fuses at the same tune.

You can only really test properly with an oscilloscope however we can diagnose module by module. Make your changes and then log which faults return.

I know you said the car was towed but does it actually start?

Hi Sensible,

Thanks for the answer.

I have replaced battery, negative and positive battery cable with new ones. Started car and every error was gone. Then I have tried to check Injector Values on DME/DDE and suddenly connection with ECU was gone and all of the described errors came back. No communication with engine ECU.

What else could this be? Could it be faulty Engine ECU? I would think not as the car starts fine.

Car starts but when you push start button, there is delay of 4 seconds until it actually starts.

Thanks

I have changed positive battery cable second time and the issue appears to be gone.

It seems that replacement positive cable was also faulty!

Will update if the issue comes back.

The issue has came back up again.

This time car was fine for a day, but next day I started in the morning and all the faults came back. Stop car, lock, unlock, start and working fine again. Then driving for 30mins and all faults just randomly appeared again.

It seems like some module could be getting under/over voltage?

Any ideas?

Thanks

If the two power cables that reside in the battery well (compartment for battery )for the engine where under water they could be corroded.

I don't see why cabin electronics would be bad if they where not also under water.

see first video in the 2nd post in the first link.

Sensible,

I have not tried changing JBE but could that be possibly related as all modules respond for some time correctly and then stops? I certainly can give a try.

ctuna,

I have changed all those two cables.

With regards to possibility of the car being under water, this could be true.
The connections of wiring for the left wing mirror has been corroded and my friend who works with cars for long time has never seen such thing. Some of the fuses in the junction box are also corroded which is also very unusual.

My next effort will be replacing a battery and potentially replacing JBE. Any other ideas for testing to find out what has happened?

Many thanks

Well all I know is that moisture can travel along wires to modules. The JBE is a gateway module. I would look to this first. But it's a difficult thing to diagnose.

I have replaced all junction box and JBE, same issue, electronics are still playing up. Sometimes it will show up and then remove key from ingnition, start again and faults are gone. Next time faults are back.

The only thing I have not tried is changing battery but the car is starting fine so I guess small chance.

Any other suggestions?

Same as before. The faults are changing all the time.

Normal scenario is as following:

Disconnect battery, connect battery, start car, no problems.

Stop car, leave for couple hours, start again (with delayed start), all the faults come back. They are constantly changing as well, e.g. rpm is appearing and disappearing, faults on iDrive disappearing and reappearing.

The hardest thing is that the faults are not consistent. They will come up sometimes but sometimes won't.

Really desperate at this point.

Have you inspected the DDE for damage?

Hi,

I have replaced engine ecu kit (DME, CAS, KEY).

The issue has not came back up again for 4 days.

I have not coded it properly, only written FA from NFRM to CAS.

Couple questions:

I have now lost CIC Maps availability (greyed out option).
I know this is due to VIN missmatch between CAS and CIC.
Can I sort this out somehow so maps are available again?

The speedo is showing tampering dot and high mileage.
Can this be coded out or it need EEPROM correction?

The engine idle sound is not good still. The gearbox is also not great but trying to work out everything in sequence.

Much appreciated everyone!

Hi Coopers,
I need your help. I'm stuck in a very very similar situation to you. Left my car sitting undercover for 3 months due to a snapped glowplug. Car is a e93 330d n57. I disconnected the battery over these 3 months and removed the DME because of how I did the repair. I put everything back today and I'm getting the exact same errors as you. Car won't start. Are you suggesting the DME was the problem? My battery didn't go under water like yours but that's bedside the point. Thanks mate

If you let it sit for 3 months the battery is likely flat and maybe bad.
Best to check the 12 volt battery feeds at all the major points before
proceeding.
