Differences in CIC Units

Anyone know what the differences in CIC Head Units are below ? Looks like one of them has an extra connector.

Early units have the extra orange HSD connector. This was going to be used for telematics but bmw never did and they deleted the connector.

Thanks, so does that mean all e9x CIC units are interchangeable (Besides coding)?

Are the face plates interchangeable ?

Yes, faceplates are interchangeable.

bare in mind that the US have the 6 button (with am / fm), everyone else get full 8 button.

coding is pretty much the same bar a few regional differences

If you have HIFI, I would recommend getting a CIC unit from a HIFI donor car. Coding is fairly strait forward but you will not be able to use your Navigation after swapping unless you activate the FSC codes on the new unit.

I heard it was after 2012 but I can't confirm. I bought my CIC unit from a 2012 335i and it had .C10 firmware. The X1 is the most likely to have the latest firmware.

I ended up buying an ICOM cable. I was able to finish my CIC retrofit with that cable. Also, don't worry about the sound options, it gets coded to your particular sound system anyways after you default code it.

Question Re your CIC Head Unit Install

Hello I recently Purchased a 2011 BMW 328i E90 in which the Head Unit was missing and sadly all of the Connections were Cut. After an extensive search , I found & purchased a Replacement CID Radio Navigation CIC Harman Becker Headhunt Model 6512 CI 9222863 that is identical to the CIC Unit that you were installing with the Extra Orange HSD Connector. Having taken my vehicle to the Local BMW Dealership and over 7 Auto Stereo Installers, all of whom said they could not reconnect my Head Unit as it would be too costly & labor intensive. However I finally came across a reputable & experiences BMW Technican who is able to repair the Cut Fiber Optic Cables along with reattaching then 6 HSD Connections and Wiring Harness if can identify where all of the 6 HSD Connectors are attached in the vehicle so that he can trace and reattach the correct HSD Connector to the Head Unit. Thus far I've been able to Identify two of the HSD Connections, the Pink HSD on the Top Right Corner that Runs Directly from the Head Unit to the Screed Display just above the in the Dash , the White HSD just below it that Connects to an Aux / USB, now he Orange that Nick 43 indicated was to be used for Telematics ? What about the the remaining 3 HSD Connections (Black, Pink & Blue)that run along the Bottom of the Head Unit, Any Idea where the connect?? I would greatly appreciate any assistance as my last option would be to tear apart the dash & reinstall a new wiring harness that would cost in excess of $3,000. I can researched via this post or directly via email at Raul.Estrada@elcentrodeayuda.org, THANK YOU!

There should only be 3 HSD connectors. The rest are FAKRA Connections used for the various Antennas. Black = DAB/FM/AM, Blue = GPS Telematics, Pink = Satellite Radio. Dont quote me on the color schemes but they all in in some for either goes to your trunk and/or/then Sharkfin roof Antenna module.

Fakra cables are a mix of RG58 and RG174 you can buy the crimping kit inexpensively for the terminals and get the terminals cheaply online or buy from BMW.

You dont need to worry about the orange hsd plug, its not used.

the pink is for the screen and the white is for the usb, in the glove box. Just buy a new ones, do not bother with a reiapr they are like $50 eavh and are plug and play.

the blue fakra is GPS, just buy a new on and install it yourself, again $30..

The black fakra is am/fm, this will need a repair and as andy says, just crimp a new end and extend with a fakra extension, $30-$40

the bottom Pink fakra is satalite radio, again as above...

In the EU

You also have

Green fakra = Dab
Yellow fakra = dab

the first thing you will need to do is replace the cut cables and plugs for the HU part.

Buy a quadloc lead from a ebay or a salvage yard, also the MOST lead that runs to the rear and to the glvebox and then replace them.

this is pretty straight forward and if you were in the uk then i would help

$3k is a total ripoff mate, do the work yourself, it a 2day job max

You will also need to code the new unit you have bought to your car so that it works when you power it up (the nav wont work otherwise).

Its not that hard if you are handy with a soldering iron and should be cheap to fix. no more than a $200 to $300

Good luck
