CA ECU Smogging

Hi forum,
Now that CA is going to start scanning ECU for tune, what are the tuned guys gonna do? Personally, I am not tuned but I was planning to go FMIC, charge pipe, intakes + tune sometime in 2022, but it I’m not sure if that’s still a good idea. Is there a workaround to the whole ECU scan thing?? Do I settle with the old Dinan or PPK (if you can even still get that)? Let me know your thoughts.

All you need to do is flash back to your OEM software when it's time to smog. When you flash MHD onto your car, it saves a backup of your original stock tune to your phone/tablet, so when the time comes to smog it just flash it back to the stock file.

You can probably get away with a fmic and chargepipe when it comes to the visual. I like to put the stock airbox back on to hide the chargepipe and to eliminate any doubt that the car is modded, even though the bms dci’s are carb approved.

And as for the ecu tune, if you have mhd then it’s a simple flash to stock and you’re done.

yes, I get away with FMIC, inlets, outlets,(and probably charge pipe this time also). I just throw the stock down pipes and airbox on, then flash to stock.

Does flashing back to stock software from MHD reset the readiness monitors?

Yes, took me a day or so driving to and from work to set mine

IMO yes, in terms of performance and sound. Only downside is having to remove them for SMOG testing

I only put stock down pipes on and change the air box back to stock, I leave everything else on. Usually takes around 2-3 hours for me, but I've had plenty of practice.

I failed smog last year and had to go to the referee…. After 3 tries I finally figured out it was the m3 gauge cluster that was causing it to fail. Giving a incorrect checksum number and instantly failing. Now I’m worried the mmi I added for the CarPlay will might do the same. Anyone else had issues with electronics??

That's what I am afraid off. I had an MSD80 that failed and I swapped and codded MSD81. Pretty sure its an automatic fail.

I have passed the last 2 times with inlets and outlets with no issues. I do put my stock airbox and DP's on so it looks stock otherwise.

Damn, I just failed for a aluminum charge pipe on my n55. Didn't feel like changing it so I took it to another place to roll the dice and they failed me also for the charge pipe . Guess I'll just put the stock one back on and get a free re-test that the second shop offered me.
