BMW E90 330i oil consumption
Hello everyone
What is the correct oil consumption in the BMW e90 330i with the N52 / N53 engine? I pour about 250ml for 1000-2000 kilometers (600-1200 miles), depending on the driving style. If I drive aggressively to the limits of 6,700 RPM, the consumption is 250 ml / 600 miles. Oil 5w40. Last edited by lukaszewski; 06-12-2019 at 08:53 PM.. |

I suggest you use the search facilty as this question has come up before. For what it's worth, my N53 uses no oil between changes (every 6K). I would expect the N52 to use more than the N53 because of direct injection, but I've no evidence to support that.

that's higher than mine (I change my oil annually, ~10k miles, and only ever have to add a quart, if that). But it doesn't sound abnormal or even that high really.

I purchased my car used 2 years ago with 57k miles on it. It’s now just over 90k miles. During this time...
The shortest interval I’ve had to add 1qt is 2700 miles The longest interval I’ve had to add 1qt is 4500 miles There is definitely some inconsistency with the usage, it’s not getting worse over time it just seems to depend on how hard I’m driving it during that oil change interval. I’m good with it I have had to add a quart to my 2011 Jeep Wrangler every 1000 miles ever since the first oil change when it was new, and it’s at 118k miles now. The Jeep has been super dependable, and so has the Bimmer actually.

Seems to be 1 L/~2000 miles for my N53. Less, if the weather's hot, so temperature seems to be a factor.
I've been putting 0w30 in, which might be a bit thin. Last time it went in for an oil change, it was another 4,000 miles before it needed topping up again, so maybe I need to switch to something thicker. --Tom |
