Do all 335i have some sort of differential braking?
Hi everyone, Im sure its covered, and Ive been searching for about three days with no luck, so Ive come to ask, do all E90 335i have a braking diff? I know March 08 introduced a revised/updated e-diff, but what about before that? Im looking to buy a 335i 6 speed, and I prefer the car to lay down 2 tracks rather than one, perhaps the better question is, will a pre 3/08 335i still put down 2 marks? I will be throwing a lsd in there as time and budget permits. Just wondering how she will behave in the meantime, thanks!

But on the note, I keep doing launches and burnouts with 2 tracks and I have a 2011 335is so I dunno. |

One thing you should look into is the different options for LSDs in the 335i. Certain models are much cheaper/easier to throw a LSD into than others. I know for my 2011 manual, a portion of the stock diff internals are welded, making it much more expensive parts and labor wise to put a LSD into it. I believe if my car was an auto or a pre-lci, it would be about a third of the price to install a LSD.

Thanks, but your car is built well after the 3/2008 cut off, so I'm a bit confused with your reply. I am asking about 335i's built before the update, and how their differential braking system will act compared to a post 3/2008 335i. Do they simply not have any form of differential braking?

Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet, So basically pre March 2008 they suck noodles and have no diff braking at all? Well when did they start to weld stuff in there? My budget allows for 2008 and up, but not too far up, as Im not wanting to spend too much on another car atm

I think it was just the N55 manual cars that had the welded diff pieces IIRC. It might be the LCI manual cars, but i'm not 100% sure.

My 09/2006 built 2007 335i 6mt has E-Diff.
From what ive read and researched, the DSC pump was changed in 3/08 because of some early build cars (2005/6's in Europe) had issues and they made the DSC pump module quicker to allow for quicker response times between each wheel getting braking pressure, whether its E-Diff, ABS or just traction control. Also BMW didnt start marketing the feature of rear brake modulation, as E-Diff until 3/08, but it was always there in some form. My car will put down two strips of rubber launching with the stock open Diff, with really no problem. I can get some quick 0-60mph times.. However, i feel the same about "sliding/drifting" the car as one of the previous posters described. Wait till you get a real LSD and then you can have your drifting fun lol. |

Hey everyone, just a quick update, I got my BMW this week! 2007 335i manual sedan, and on my way to the grocery store I decided to stop by my local "skid pad" to see how my rear would react... Dispite the fact that I have a very mild clutch slip under boost, this car murders tires with the traction all the way off, and it left two marks and a cloud of smoke. I went to test a couple donuts, and sure enough felt very similar to my manual LSD IS300, just a bit heavier, and a bit turboier. During straightline burnouts I can definitely notice the LSD effect is being caused by braking, but until a real LSD swap is in place, I can get with it, very impressive car for a pre 3/08 and open diff.

A guy named Matt Whitbread does in house machining of welded diff and install of Wavetrac LSD. He has many happy customers. He got banned but I have contact info if you’re interested.
I had a Wavetrac done by HP Autosport and it works great. Harold frequents this forum. |

If it didn't have the ediff coding it would be pretty obvious. My 330i does not and that car will spin one wheel and go nowhere all day. Trying to get the back to come around in anything less than thick snow requires you to really upset and throw the car around. Ediff 135i still dimwitted and slow but comes around with relative ease. Despite having almost twice the power it doesn't spin and stop accelerating at half throttle in the rain

Huh? All e90s have an open 'ediff'. Did the DSC software programming change 3/2008?
