TPMS issue with new wheels?

Hi everyone,

Just joined this forum and I've owned my 2007 e92 since September and I've been loving it!

I bought a set of BMW wheels with snow tires on them, they have tpms sensors and are confirmed to be working.

After I put them on I got a "TPMS Inactive" warning with 5 codes displaying every sensor was not reading. I have tried resetting the tpms on the car's computer (I don't have idrive) and tried resetting the code with an obd2 scanner. The code immediately comes back.

Does anybody know what could be wrong? Do the TPMS sensors need to be calibrated similarly to how a battery is registered to these cars?

Thanks for any help in advance!

I checked with my euro mechanic and he confirmed the car would learn the ID of the tpms sensor on its own through driving the car so there is no need for a BMW scan tool.

It seems the problem is the frequency of the sensors. My e92 is a 2007 and this wheels/tires came off a 2011 model and the sensor frequency changed 2010+

Exactly - I had a 2009 E93 and bought snow tires/wheels from a 2011 - had the same problem. I just lived with the TPMS inactive light being on in the winter; was so nice to put the summer tires on and have it go back out!

The TPMS frequency is either 433MHz or 315MHz. The module has to have the transmitter ID coded to it to recognize the transmitters in each of the wheels. The E90 uses 433 in 2007 thru 2012. You need the correct TPMS scan tool and BMW scan tool to initiate the new pressure sensors to the TPMS. Each sensor has a unique electronic ID.

There were 2 generation of TPMS sensors (not to be confused with FTM) for E9X. Both are 433Mhz. These sensors are NOT interchangeable.

My 2009 E91 LCI uses older version, 2011 E90 LCI & 2013 E70 - newer.
The split date varies by E9X model. For E91 it was mid 2009

I tried to swap E91 / E90 wheels and it did not work (for me)

My E70 has 2 set of wheels summer and winter.
I swap between them with a simple TPMS iDrive reset without an issue.

OE & HUF sensors are known to be auto-magically learned by car computer.
Other brands may need additional effort to be registered

The realoem P/N references are very confusing.

Hence, relevant HUF P/N instead
RDE048V21 - "older" <- these should work for 2007 MY
RDE012V21 - "newer"

as already noted above, your options are
- decent scanner that will help diagnose root cause.
- move original sensors to new wheels.
- buy new set of TPMS sensors
- code car to use FTM
- ignore the issue

I could not "afford" OE and do not want to mess with cheap ones.
Hence, I use HUF as less expensive OE alternative
